In the Barrows today, helping my mate

Got tonnes of abuse from someone PL there greys, which i think is not on.

Ok maybe im wrong, how many ppl can camp the Phantom Room???

Is it Just 1 Thrgy on his own or can other camp, without getting abuse or having their kills stolen, imagine that u go to kill something then someone casts at yourr kill killing it, and they talk about you braking the COC by camping a room.

Ok so i move room, then sunndenly his mate wizzies turns up and starts killing all the mobs in your room. WTF is going on in this realm.....

I will mention no names. but im sure i will be flamed or pwned or whatever it is these days.

Im Mad, Seething..

PLing happens loads lately - shame really when it affects other people. I've helped people out at times but never to the detrement of other players. If there is anyone else about I'll either buff them aswell or move off if the spawn rate is too low.

My own personal views here.....

Any group exping the normal way has more "rights" to a camp spot than someone powerleveling there grey alt.

Groups first to a room have my respect and I'll never pull from a location already camped without asking first.

Today we are going to study the words

They're
Their
There

"They're" is short for "They are". Example: This is Bob and Alice, they are married and have 3 dogs.

"Their" is a term to define a relation of owning. Example: This is Bob and Alice, they are married and have 3 dogs. Their dogs are named Spot, Fido and Crapsalot.

"There" is a term used to define position. Example:

Bob: Alice, that darn dog Crapsalot has done it again!
Alice: What? Oh no, has he taken a crap on the carpet again? Darn dog! Ok, I'll clean it up, where is the poo?
Bob: It's over there! *Bob points*

"There" can also be used to define position in a more abstract way. Example:

Bob: There are too many dumb people in the world.
Alice: Yes, there sure are.

Not gonna go overboard, but I've noticed lately that both Americans and normal people fail to understand these words. "They're" are two words, and has nothing to do with "Their" and has nothing to do with "There".

Another example of how to use "there".

not native english so maybe that´s why but I would think alice would reply with "there sure is"....

if she only said "there are" it would sound right, but putting sure in the sentence then "there sure is" sounds more right than "there sure are"

I've suggested these before:

- have a lower lvl cap on barrows to enter it, say lvl 25.

- disallow greys to receive XP in parties. So only lvls 36+ would benefit from having a 50 in the party. Any 35 or lower partying a 50 would get no XP.

Alternatively, make the mobs in barrows harder. Be nice to see the advisors/wizzies with quickcast, and also random selection of which member of party to attack first :)

I applaud your constructive post, but must respectfully ask of you to start next weeks language lesson with the proper useage of the words "your" and "you're", which is imho far more abused than there/their.

Dan, I agree that pl seems to be quite en vogue in Alb these days (including myself there, planning to pl some of my alts too eventually :p ) - but yes, a bit of consideration for others goes a long way ... ;)

Still, having said that, the numer of pms I am getting both for main and alts for "pl requests" suggests that a lot of ppl start OFF these days expecting to be pl (even by strangers, lol) ... - so, attitudes in Alb have gotten worse, imho - and the "payment" issue is just another symptom; so, guess it comes down to move away / ignore ppl who bug you and try to find some "nicer" spots/grps/situations ... - at least that's what I am trying.

I think the CoC doesn't state anything about 2 people camping a room or anything and is fine really, but hitting mobs after they have been pulled by another person/group without consent is against the CoC....

What he wrote was correct, its just that it sounds very fake and wooden to say "Yes, there are, you are right". If you get my meaning :)

First, it's a very special example, where you leave out part of the sentence, Much as "I am smarter than he.", which many people (both in Swedish and English) think is wrong. They think that "I am smarter than him." would be the correct phrase, unfortunately, it's not. Give it ten years though, and the language(s) will probably have changed.

And "noaim", I am not flaming people here. English is not my native language either, in fact, it's more like my third, but if I make major mistakes in English, I actually prefer if people correct me. That way I can improve and what I write will look better the next time around. Ofcourse, nit-picking is stupid, I am not gonna run around and correct people who makes typos or misspell Welsh townnames. Neither am I gonna comment on words written together or apart (well, ok, in Swedish I would, since the words change meaning if you write them apart there) etc.

You're and your? Is that a problem...hmm, yeah, I've seen the "ure" and "ur" abbrivations a few times. Well ok:

"You're" = Short for "You are". Meaning, a description or order (false or true) of a person you are talking directly to. Examples:

Alice: You are a very ugly man! (Not a very nice thing to say perhaps, but as we all know, it does apply to several people.)

Alice: You are going to take out the trash! (Almost a worse thing to say, if you ask me. But all the poor sods that have gotten themselves a wife, should recognize this order.)

"Your" = Kinda like the same as "Their" only instead of an ownage-related connection between several people and an object/several objects it's the same connection between one person that you are talking directly to and an object/several objects. Examples:

Your mother makes extremely tasty brownies. (Little Daoc humour (remove the u if you prefer US spelling) there.)

Alice: Hey Bob, maybe it's time to take a shower? Your bodily odour is becoming quite offensive!

Both these examples define a very lucid form of "owning", but the same applies to any object, whether it's a ball, cat or a really big pile of crap (which would be Crapsalot's, although only insane people would really try to verbalize the connection to the dog...dogs can't after all talk. I hope...)

And ofcourse, "ure" is just an ugly version of "You're/You are" and "ur" is a slightly more accepted form for "Your".

Like I said, trying to help people. Some people are not capable of learning the basics, and I am sorry for you. But I don't whine, I correct. I haven't said anything about people being idiots because they don't know the difference, I try to explain to them the difference. Obviously not all people are capable of reading, and that is ok. But don't be mad at me because I try to help you, please.

Gabrial, ty...but since I was continuing a previous thought..

"...I am not gonna run around..."

and followed it with

"Neither am I gonna comment..."

is it not correct?

No - gonna is not actually word was my point. I suppose neither could be used but would have been better preceeded by a comma rather than a full stop I think?

Anyway, dont take advice from me, Im not that well edumacated!

PLing is another symptom of people who appear to be stuck with nothing to do in their lives but play this game! If you didnt own a second account, imagine the time and money you'd save!

I was about to do a big math equation here, then all of sudden i came to my senses and decided, screw it, its too hot today, and work is boring enough. Lets just say you'd save a sh!t load of cash, allowing you to try new pasttimes, like RL socialisation, talking without a keyboard, getting fresh air (tm), maybe even meeting new friends and knowing what they look like! IMAGINE THAT!!! madness...

You could take up a hobbie, perhaps take up some hard drugs, or become an alcoholic? It would mean you are still able to sit and play the game, but now you could do it behind an imaginary soft lense, and the odd blackout! what fun

just seems silly to need 16 character slots on each server (here comes the only math i was prepared to do, so don't blink, k) and the choice of three realms on camlann - this gives you the facility to make 80 characters!!!!! damn, you must have some real big plans to need that kind of capacity...

Ah, a lifestyle / philosophy question :D - been thinking it's about time for one again, so, yes, I am easily triggered here :) :

Well, if you don't enjoy the game, don't play it :p - pl or not ... ;)

It's all about fun really, so balancing it against time/money to save is just a general issue of balancing your marginal untility (or benefit) from playing with your marginal willingness to pay ... ;) i.e. basic economics.

and personally speaking: "try new pasttimes, like RL socialisation, talking without a keyboard, getting fresh air (tm), maybe even meeting new friends and knowing what they look like" ... is exactly what I don't want, got that 50+ hours a working week in my pretty "social", networking based profession, can really do without it in my spare time ... (imagine: no need to dress up, listen to boring conversations, smiling at silly jokes, looking for the next business opportunity and assessing everyone's purchasing power by scrutinizing their shoes, ties, watches, cars and designer labels ... - bliss!!! :p )

I love the fact that ingame i can talk/socialise with ppl I KNOW I probably wouldn't even think to look at/ socialise with in rl - regardless of nationality, skin colour, gender, age, religion, life style, dress code, professional/educational background/social status, approval by friends/families/neighbors/colleagues ... ;)

And no shit, please, about being able to do this irl, this is imho just theory ... I would bet that at least 90% of all ppl do take these "rl" factors into account when meeting ppl .. ;)

Well, "gonna" is not a word, but neither is "u"...we still accept them as we are computer nerds. And it probably would have been more correct with a comma, but people bitch at me because I tend to write extremely long sentences as is, with several commas, hehe.

And I listen to everyone that makes a valid point. Even though you were nit-picking. ;)

Elveniel, the discussion was about using the right word in the right place, not spelling. I doubt anyone that wrote "...PL'ing there chars..." actually tried to spell "their". ;)
And no, despite what is taught in school nowadays, it's not just about people understanding what you say or write. Writing a CV and using there instead of their will surely not matter if you plan to work at McD's, but let's hope that most people won't end up working there.

However, it is totally a personal choice whether to learn or not. If you feel that you don't need to know what a certain word means, it is your right to ignore me, and trust me...I won't care a whole lot.
