It may well be true, my point was that theres fuck all you could do about it, except invading thier country (oops! maybe not) , and even if you did theyh wouldnt want your help anyway. Id wait about 300 years then start criticizing them :)

It's one extreme to another.

Taking the story at face value, a girl defended herself from being raped and ended up killing one of her attackers. She gets the death sentence.

While over here we have people driving along in their cars with no insurance, DUI and killing people and barely getting a slap on the wrist with a few months in prison and/or a driving ban.

From their point of view we're the ones who don't do enough to punish the guilty.

Where's the middle ground?

The lack of a full name makes this story impossible to verify. I can't find a primary source, or anything which isn't the same article rehashed.

Its made up to stoke the fires of hatred - judging from reactions here it seems to work - both sides are making stuff up now (Pro and Anti Islam) and most people have already been factionalised so it just validates their position :(

P.S. From the title of this thread I thought this was going to be about Australia!

Possibly. I'm not commenting for definate, since I can't prove its fake either, but an extremely biased source, which is not based in Tehran at all, and a load of nutter blogs and a petition, does not make a story true.

The originally quoted source from the IranFocus site, is a Iranian newspaper without a website, so the trail goes cold for me there.

It smells fake tho - thats why the more mainstream media arent touching it at a guess...

I'm not saying that its not possible under Iranian law but it reads more like an actual happening has been massively re-worked and embellished - I'd guess it resembles the actual circumstance about as much as one of those films thats quoted as 'based on a true story' :)

An Iranian court has sentenced a teenage rape victim to death...

You later learn she wasn't actually raped, but the story starts like that to make it more shocking.

99% of death sentances are ignored by the masses.
Male inmates are raped in their hundreds of thousands, in the US alone, but no one cares. A man goes in for 2 years and comes out wth H.I.V. - don't all incarcerations become a death sentance when the odds are so high?

I don't particularly care either, but I'm not pointing fingers at others because we live in such a perfect society.

Well its not that unusual for over the top sentences to be handed out in the UK for what could be claimed as self-defence so I struggle to see what your problem with this is. Perhaps you have more detail than the incredibly one-sided story from the linked article.

Clearly the self-defence argument wasnt accepted and she was found guilty of murder. In many countries that have the death penalty as an option it would be used in a murder case.

It might seem extreme: but your reaction is just typical 'Daily Mail reader' bollocks.

When was the last time we hung a woman or a man for that matter who had killed in self defence?
So you would be happy if you were faced with the death sentence and had no right to a lawyer?

IF thats what happened. Which is very debatable. Far worse happens everyday all over the place, but it is generally ignored unless there is some political reason behind highlighting it.
