Himse, quite funny you call me politically correct just becouse Im against hitting a small child. But sure, I guess the difference lies in where you live, and what kind of family you've been growing up in.

Smacking is 100% OK! Laying into a child is not ok..I was smacked as a child and I tell ya what..it turned me from an out of control little fuck to a changed child who respected others.

People who are against violent disipline are the reason chavs litter our streets and yob culture is rife.

I think they should bring back disipline in schools, detention threats never scared me..the hand of my father scared me into line and I am greatfull for the smackings I got.

Well smacking should not be the first action taken, some kids you can actually talk to. But I agree theese chavs really need a good spanking its a language they understand.

But as other said there is smacking and abuse, and there is a think line between them and easy to step over...

If you are naughty and you just get told off, big deal, its not going to stop you doing it again. If you get a smack round the legs, its going to make you think again.

like i said, depends how good the parents are at striking fear into you with voice and looks i suppose.

if i did something wrong and i got the look and the shouting, i didnt do it again.

i never got physically punished and i didnt get grounded. yes i did wrong things, but then i got taught they are wrong because my parents actually talked to me about it. can you believe it?! they talked to me instead of hitting me!

i actually learned from mistakes rather than physical assaults, crazy i know.

Physical assaults lmao. This is exactly whats wrong with society these days. Each to their own. Im not out to change your opinion. But to imply that people who have to give their kids a clip round the legs to keep them in check are bad parents is just silly and wide of the mark.

making assumptions at its finest. im NOT pc in the slightest, i hate all the politically correct shit.

what im against is whacking kids. to make it clearer -

im for -

being able to hang the flag of our country
not giving immigrants residence because of human rights laws
not pandering to religious beliefs just to make them people feel comfortable
telling racist, xenophobic and anti-religious jokes. because ffs, ITS A JOKE.
mass culling of chavs and their mutant off spring

against -
whacking kids

is that better for everyone? maybe you need to know what PC means before you start saying other people are PC :)

But to imply that people who have to give their kids a clip round the legs to keep them in check are bad parents is just silly and wide of the mark.

maybe that was the wrong word to use. how about if parents controlled their kids propley they wouldn't need to whack them? kids running around like fucking lunatics in restraunts is very very annoying but its not the kids fault they are doing that. they are like 4 or 5, its the parents fault for not being in control.

I lock all my babies in the basement with the lights off and occasionally throw scraps down to them when I can be bothered.

Milo (the eldest) is turning into a right little fighter, he's killed two of his brothers already, I'm so proud.

But when they do get out of hand, i.e. when trying to escape I've got an iron rod which does the job. A few swift blows to the head tends to stop them trying to escape, or anything else for that matter.

haha and i bet you cash in the child support money? You da man!

You are doing the same thing the PC brigade do though, blowing things totally out of proportion. Unless you're ideas of what a smack is are totally different to mine, I cannot see how you could liken it to physical abuse. (the key word here is "abuse". I personally think delivering a short, non-harming smack to be a good "use" of discipline, rather than an abuse)

Calling all parents who cannot control their child by voice alone bad parents, is another sweeping generalisation, and an unfair one. As has been stated, I beleive there will be points where vocal commands alone will not be enough to control a child. Much in the same way as a fence alone will not deter sheep, but putting up an electric fence, which delivers a short sharp shock, proves an adequate way of getting the point across.

who said you can't?

only problem is that they might smack you back

the law says i cant smack people just because i think they are out of line.

which i said above is not the word i should of used.

Smacking i have nothing against, and its laughable you can say that people who do it are bad parents.

Hitting a kid however is a completely different ball game , smacking doesnt hurt the child, hitting's sole purpose is to cause pain

smack is not =hit, I can see you getting legal problem if you hit someone, but for a smack? no way, no one would bother with that. But against a grownup it would most likely escalate into hitting

Before i even clicked the link i knew it was by bugz :X

whos to say how much a smack hurts? or exactly what a smack is?

if i smacked someone with full force i could knock them on their ass perhaps, is it ok because i only used what some may class as a slap?

thats hitting... not smacking
you did it to cause pain, a tap on the wrists does not hurt, how to people know? how about their parents did it to them?

When they are very young you cant bargain with them, taking stuff away from them does not work, when they are being difficult shouting at them doesnt work either (and to be honest if you think smacking is bad then you should be against shouting at them as its exactly the same thing, causing fear to get a responce). There is only 2 ways of getting them to do something which is cause a small amount of shock/pain or confinement (example is a naughty step)
Every kid is different, its pretty stupid to presume one way works for all some kids need a tap on the wrists to get their attention others dont, obviously smacking is a last resort but sometimes its a necesary one

But i am genuinly curious now, howwould you deal with a 20 month baby who is throwing a tantrum and refuses to listen to you

I would leave them in a restrained seating device, pram whatever and ignore them. So long as they couldn't hurt themselves it should be fine.

and that is better than smacking how?
you are causing a equal amount, if not more mental trauma, in fact strapping them down could be considered more abuse than a smack on the wrists

Who said it was better or worse. I made no comment on it.

Straps on chairs are to prevent kids from falling out, are you suggesting that a kid can only be strapped into a seat, chair, pram or even a car seat if they are in a good mood? And if they start to fuss you have to remove them?

The point of ignoring kids is that they don't constantly play up because you have tought them that if they do you eventually cave in. It is better to teach them that making a fuss having tantrums doesn't work.

ive seen kids being smacked by parents and it hasnt stopped them running amok one bit, one time i was on a train and the kid was making noise, then the dad smacks the kid (seemed only to be a light tap though tbh)and then the kid starts screaming, didnt help me sleep at all :p

im against smacking in majority of situations, sometimes in extreme cases where the kid is running riot (but tbh if kid was brought up properly this shouldnt happen anyway :p ) then maybe

also would like to see a poll with nationalities, seems alot of the scandinavians here are very much against smacking, but mainly brits that are pro smacking :p

My opinion is that the kids lack respect for the parent the parent losses it and smacks the child.

I am on at my kids all the time, if I set a rule then I enforce that rule 24/7 it doesn't get realxed if i am in a good mood and it doesn't get more extreme if I am in a bad mood. My rules remain constant and consitent and the kids know where they stand and I know at which point I punish (which tbh I don't do very often these days because they know the boundries) Kids just need training, rewards and punishment's like pets but with the advantage of having reason in later years. ;)

as i said before, it is a last resort if nothing else works... (keyword last resort), i dont see any harm in it at all as it is causing the same effects as "constraining", them with the same side effect. We already have covered that it doesnt actually physically harm the child

@Ormof
i also said that all kids are different, you tailor discipline to each child as they all react differently and show their moods in a different way. Knowing when to do things is part of being a good parent,

thats bullshit, most people i know who got slapped either turned into fuckwits who breaks the law or in stressed situations etc gets violent. i didnt get slapped and im not as such violent, goes for most non slapped kids i know... its bad parenting that makes shitfaces not non-violent childhood.

on the other hand, pain is a fear such as being yelled at and dissapointing the parent which is what makes children not do stuff - whats better, psycologial fear or physical fear? i dont know, but i wouldn't slap my child. but pain can cause both psylogical and physical fear i guess

I can see what tris is saying here, but I think I agree with marc the most so far in this thread.

I got the odd smack as a child, although it was very rare for it to happen - I'd have to be way out of line for it and when it happened I'd know for sure that I was in the wrong.

My mum brought me and my brother up mostly as a single parent, which is an impossible job at the best of times. I think I've turned out alright, with a good idea of right and wrong, as well as a very strongly held set of principles.

I think my mum was generally a little too leanient, although when compared to the average family you see nowadays she'd probably be considered slightly strict.

I think part of what tris is saying has merit - resorting to hitting a child means you've failed to control them via normal means, and I mean this in no way as a critisism of my, or anyone else's parenting methods. As I say, I got the odd smack on rare occasions, and even though the fact that it happened perhaps highlights a slight flaw in the way my mum brought me up, the act itself helped to negate that flaw in most cases. If that makes sense :)

I think parents should beable to smack thier children, I also think that physical abuse (a different thing to physical discipline) should continue to be rooted out and dealt with most severely.
