Well, after a short discussion with a home-audio minded friend about perhaps ditching my AV set for a sweet stereo hifi, my AV heard me and the right front channel decided to break :/
Now I have a couple options: get the (10yo Onkyo 595) receiver fixed (meh), get a new stereo hifi thingy, new speakers and a (small) sub (yay), or finally, not get any of that but just get a current, similar model, for example an Onkyo 876 (yay).
Me being me, I have drawn up a list of things I could do:
Sorry if I don't link to anything, I have serveral Dutch sites open but I suppose none of those will interest you and only cause pity at the insane prices us Eurolanders have to pay (yes, yes, I know the UK is expensive blah blah etc etc )
Anyway, here is the thing
STEREO PROS:
anyway, advice please

Me being me, I have drawn up a list of things I could do:
- fix (imo not worth it, the amp is 10yo and has served me well enough)
- get a new AV amp, for example an Onkyo 876 but I can't find those anywhere, only it's bigger brother the 906, which I am *not* getting because they cost 2000 euros :/ (on the other hand, here in the NL a new stereo hifi, a pair of speakers and a subwoofer all together will set me back about that amount too) but I could also go for something like a NAD T755, which I can currently get for 900e.
- get a whole new set, but *stereo*, not 5 or 7.1 of which I am thinking:
- AMP: something like a NAD C355BEE. Sweet amp, nice reviews, not too stupidly expensive, or an Arcam FMJ-A28, equally sweet on paper, nice reviews, etc. Note, I haven't listened to either of them yet, and your advice/input would be nice to hear.
- SPKRS: currently I am absolutely torn between the ELAC 310 CE, which has rave reviews and looks awesome, it's brother the ELAC BS 244, and the Monitor Audio GS 10, which is an extremely well received and reviewed speaker. Ofc, as with the amps, I have not heard any of these speakers, and would require listening to them with the amp and sub I have in mind. I just realized that ELAC may not mean a lot to you UK types, but the speakers are pretty awesome tbh
- SUB: I don't really listen to bangin' tjooonz, but I do like my musics, so I want a small and well mannered sub to fill out the sound without making my neighbors want to kill me. I am thinking of a REL T3. Again, I will have to hear the whole combination of stuff to be sold on any of the components.

STEREO PROS:
- I listen to music way more than I watch movies, so a stereo set is really more logical.
- the new stuffs will give me pretty noises and nice hardware stuffs to nerdgasm over
- I get to do away with the space-consuming 5 speakers I have cluttering my room.
- it's at least 2500 euros to get me the stuffs I want and I am not even going terribly overboard tbh imo bbq
- unsure about connecting my set-top box to the stereo amp for sound. it already goes into my 1080p tv with a fricking scart because my cable company is too cheap to give me a hdmi stb :/
- wtf do I do with my PS/3? stick it on the aux or something?
- no more dolby when I watch a movie (not that I notice)
- a new AV amp will let me HDMI the PS/3 into it and then into my TV
- a new AV amp should let me stick the SCART from the stb into it, then upscale and HDMI into the TV (ooo yum)
- I will keep my existing speakers until they bore me (more than they do already)
- no nice new speakers
anyway, advice please
