Personally after the last two Creative sound cards I've been through,

SBlive
SBlive 5.1

I'm leaving creative well alone, just like I'm leaving VIA well alone from now on cos there always the dissapointments, the weakest link of my PC's :/

So has anyone got an alternative to SB cards? Its gotta be compatible with Win XP and a P4...

I've been looking at the Herc Game Theater XP?

And yes I know this should be in the hardware forum but I'm replying to someone else so it doesn't matter as much ;)

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum......

I did try the Hercules Gametheatre XP, but I sent it back as the sound quality was very poor. Perhaps I had a 'duff' unit, but compared to the Soundblaster Live Platinum it was poo.
The build quality was excellent though and it was designed well, but I have Desktop Theatre 2500 speakers with a decoder/ amplifier and the XP's connections meant that I had to bypass the decoder and connect the speakers and sub directly to the XP unit.

Christ I miss having sound on my PC....... though it makes you more aware visually in games like C.S and also I now know how a deaf player feels.

The techie lads from upstairs at my work have been reciently been banging on about the nForce. From what I gather (I generally dont listen to them too long, for fear of comma setting in), the nForce is going to be capable of upto 256 voices in DirectSound. Its also going to be the only sound card that can generate Dobly Digital. Whilst the SBLive5.1 and upwards cards can decode pre-set dolby digital streams, they cannot create their own. Ie they would only be able to decode a DD5.1 stream in say an intro sequence, whilst the nForce can generate them on the fly. I think anyone that listened to a good 5.1 setup will agree, its far in advance of 4 point sound by EAX. This might not be 100% accurate, any errors please feel free to correct.
Plus the nForce is going to have a ethernet card and GeForce2 mx card built into the motherboard. Sounds quite nice if you ask me.

Very tempting, my amp cant do 96khz.

I really cant be bothered to go from dvd > soundcard > amp its too much hard work for slightly better sound quality.

Maybe when I have more cash I might consider it.

Does it decode mp3's any different from the SB Live!? If the answer is no I shall stick with what I have, as I dont use the bugger for anything else :)

Don't buy it if you want to input stuff to it, go buy a real audio enthusiasts card
