Sorry TdC, seems that what I've written is a load of tosh :) Sadly BF2 doesn't support custom resolutions, unlike many other games I've used it on. Here's hoping a patch will help things.

If you open My Documents/Battlefield 2/Profiles/0001/Video.con in Notepad or your favourite text editor and look for VideoSettings.setResolution you can change it to whatever you want, e.g.

VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x1024@75Hz
I've done this in other games to support my notebook's widescreen resolution and it has always worked perfectly thus far (like you, Half-Life 2 with everything turned up at 1440x900 looks amazing :)). As for AA and AF outside of the game, it may be worth a try. Some games don't like you doing so (Doom 3 may be one such example) but most are happy to use the settings. At worst it won't work, or will noticably impact on quality or performance, but it only takes a minute to try and it's easy enough to revert back :)
