Oh look! Gorbachio being a fuck in 2006!

As re; theories - many of Science's theories have not been proved and will not be proved in the foreseeable future. Thus they are not true.

For me, the idea of a universe being created that can perfectly support our life's is hard to think of. For thousands upon thousands of variables to all become exact breeding amounts for us is incomprehensible. Ofcourse, scientists combat this with the 'Multiple Life Theory' - the idea that each universe supports a different breed of life (aka. aliens) through the variables that have mixed together. Thus, we are in fact a product of the variables and not vice versa. However, we have no ability to travel to other universes and will not have so for hundreds of years presumably - so this theory cannot be proved.

With that in mind, why do people put all their sense into science. Science works on the assumption that everything builds together perfectly. If everything builds together perfectly, then either we're extremely fkin fortunate people or there's some pre-determined way to the world.

so by this logic, it must also your belief that any sort of god is equally improbable.

In a basic sense, yes.

But since people have a strong belief in theories and science, the thus the same applies to religion - people are permitted to believe in the theories.

We could take the idea literally and say 'we believe in nothing - religion nor science - as neither can be fully proven' but then that would leave a big hole in the human mind.

This is my basic perception anyway. People put faith in scientific theories that can't be fully proven and people do the same for religious theories.

What's the difference?

from my perspective at least there is a lot more traceable progress in science (obviously) than there is in religion. my issue with religion and faith in the main is that it is a stagnant and non-progressive set of ideals that have remained essentially the same for hundreds, if not thousands, of years - whereas science is moving forward all the time.

to me it is all about relativity - science can disprove elements of religion, whereas there is nothing about religion that can be proved with cold, hard fact.

So if we dont know something then just make up a story to explain it.

Yeah.... good idea. :m00:

And again, science doesnt offer truths, just the most likely option.

You're an ass.

The only real difference between scientific theories and religious ones is that religion says absolutely 100% that this happened! And then it's all based on a book which is 2000 years old and kept being rewritten back then. Science on the other hand is current and can give a decent discussion, explaining exactly WHY these theories MIGHT be true.

If a scientist turned around tomorrow and gave an accurate recent discussion as to how or why a God might ever be explained instead of just saying 'he works in mysterious ways' whenever a good argument against it is put up, I'd listen. Whenever a man of the cloth came around to our house back at home, I'd always invite him in, have a cup of tea and discuss issues but the blanket of blind faith put over peoples eyes is so thick it's starting to get humourous.

Why would God say don't murder people in the commandments after just killing an army of people by crashing the ocean onto them. Personally I hope there IS a God because if there is, I'm pretty sure he's going to be nothing like christianities distorted picture of an ever loving person who...ermm...continues to let rape and murder continue. It's all just a big contradiction.

I'd think of him/her more as a farmer who planted the seed of humanity and then left us to live our own lives, not watching all of us all the time...that's just santa talk...

You're an ass.

Can you prove that there may be a greater being in another universe? No.

Can you prove that there is life that exists due to the variables in another universe? No.

Both can be proven or disproven over time.

And ofcourse, Science offers truths. They start off as theories and are either disproved or proved. That's how much of the science is discovered.

This one thread that i have to say i have really enjoyed reading. Not seen so many good posts with thought out responses to so many different and yet essential questions.

I wish i could have got on it a lot earlier rather then just catching the bumbed side of it though i have to say that between all the posters on here not a lot was left out for anyone to add to it. I am sure most of you are all sighing with relief anyway :D

I've always felt that there's no harm in believing.

If there's nothing, you won't notice.
If there is, well, you'd be glad to believe.

The real b*tch comes if you chose the wrong belief :D

"What, i'm dead, no valhalla? Oh the christian heaven...ack...can i have another go?"

Sadly thats not true. Yeah if you only believe in a god and nothing else then its not harmful. But if you think about how much damage christianity and islam have done then that is hardly true.

It's only caused the harm you know about. It's not as bad as you think. The extreamists give them the bad names.

I know a few-non-terroristial people and a few non-omgjesusisgreat-christians.

So your only problem with me believing in something is that someone somewhere once might have done something bad in it's name?

So if i don't do any holocaust or mass murdering in valhallas name, i can believe in private without you shoving "stupid moron" down my throat?

This is called "Pascal's Wager" and it seems a little odd to me...surely any God worth his salt would see through this fence-sitting? It's not like belief is really a conscious choice, you either do or you don't.

In that case it would make more sense NOT to believe...if you're right, you get to spend your Sunday mornings in bed and if you're wrong, God will forgive you anyway. This has the added benefit of not having to choose a single God and then explain to [Thor|Yahweh|Allah|Zeus|Mithras] why you spent the last few decades praying to someone else if you pick the wrong one :)

I'll call that Dave's Wager...I'm off to Wikipedia!

Yeah, if you believe in such a way, then it's fence sitting and quite possibly frowned upon.

Not including that christian "all forgiving" pansy god :D

I just find it to be an excellent view on "why", as a "why not".

I still believe what i believe, there's no "maybe" in my mind.

I guess I'm religious in the way I do certain things, other then that I don't let my religion govern my life in any way. I make my own moral decisions based on what I think is right

Harmless and stupid are two different things. Bugz is harmless, but would anyone here say that he is smart?

Believing in valhalla is stupid, but harmless in your case i guess. If you say so, i'll believe you -,-

Unless he's bullshitting about his exam results, I'm pretty sure he's smarter than a few people here.

On what grounds do you call it stupid by the way? What do you 'believe in'?

I can't get it around my own brain (I don't follow religion) on how the hell you can say this, you can say "I don't believe it" but you've got no right calling it stupid :S

From what i've seen, Bugz has a nice set of brains in his head, and even if not the smartest around, he's certainly smart enough not to insult people on their beliefs alone. Unlike some.

So, if i called(big if, because i don't do that sort of thing), that you're equally stupid for not believing in anything, would it make you go:

"Hmm, you're right" or

"No, you're wrong and i'm right! and that accusation of me being stupid for living my life the way i live, is insulting!"

If you come to my face and call me stupid and a moron for believing in something, when i haven't provoked you in any way, you'll see how harmless i am by the way.

It has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with disrespectful brats and those who need a bit of a slapping.

Just to let you know, i had no choice but to report this behavior.

Taking things out of peoples personal lives, that they have given in other threads, and using them in a non-necessary flamepost, crosses the distant line in these parts.

This may be a rather "free" place to roam and flaming is something we like around here, but some lines must be drawn.
