forgive my questioning this... but since when has Ireland been a sovereign state and NOT been part of GB? 1919? We are part of the british isles which are a group of islands off the northwest coast of continental Europe comprising Great Britain (Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland), Ireland and a number of smaller islands.

to answer the initial poster, i think americans, the majority of them dont realize that GB is made up of four different countries. for this reason i suspect that they call ye the generic term British as you are all part of the same land mass, Wales, Scotland and England. referring to the army, olympic teams etc. i would imagine that this is a strong reason for the generic British use. however having said this you could ask them to point out europe and they would probably point to china. so i wouldn't get to upset by dense people calling you British.

Finally, and i hope this sticks. being irish means we are not part of the UK. when i'm abroad and i have said that i'm irish, i have never once been called british. i would say that 99% of all people realize that ireland is a separate country. we have leprechauns dont ya know
