There isn't as it goes. TomTom on my iPhone (which there was no alternative to when I purchased) is easily the best SatNav I've ever used. I didn't and wouldn't pay for their stupid dock though especially as one dock only fits one model, i.e. buy it for 4 can't use it with 4S.
That is good new as that has put me off in the past on my stand alone unit you need to pay for map upgrades after the year. If the iPhone one does not I might buy that. Tesco had £25 iTunes vouchers for £12.50 of club card points so they will make it fairly cheap.

It would be interesting to know what sort of income / market share the Mac Pro has though, if it's not a big money spinner in comparison to the iPhone, iPad and Macbooks then I can understand.

It's also hideously expensive for what it is :(.

Try "Waze" first mate, it's free and actually pretty decent. The missus uses it on her iPhone when she gets stuck. It does crowdsourced traffic and will probably hold you over until Apple release iOS6.

Yeah used Skobbler before though Waze is better imho. The place locator lets you use not only postcodes but also 4sq / FB / etc.

They make crazy margains on the hardware (more than any model from any mainstream manufacturer) and they sell alot of units into design houses, the publishing and creative world. It definately generates good profits for them and so they keep price gouging the customers with minor upgrades that are far from bleeding edge. As the quote I posted mentions, 3 year old hardware in a 10 year old case design' but priced at the very top end of pre-built systems from anyone. If you break down the current build cost of a Mac Pro and compare it to the retail price you are talking 200-300% (maybe more) markup which is almost unheard of in the industry.

Somebody must be paying it. I'd still like to know what the income / market share ration is compared to their other products.

Apple tech announcements are like baby photos.

Nobody's asked to see them, nobody needs to see them. But they all fucking swoon and crow over them anyway. Chumps.

I bet that new Mac Book flys with the Flash Storage and an i7 plus with the real Resolution its the first laptop in a while that has made me think about buying one. 768 or 1080 resolutions are pathetic bring on a load of Ultrabooks with decent resolutions.

Except that if you diss apple photos, you won't get lynched by 99% of people ;)

I still use my old TomTom for SatNav because of the live updates - it also means I still have the smartphone for calls.

It's a new religion. Science & tech meets good design and retarded Americans.

The conditions are ripe for a mass "woop".

TomTom lets you take calls while in use on mine and does the live updates (extra purchase or subscription iirc).

I do love my TomTom + Car Kit + Fixed Cradle as it means I get SatNav + Handsfree + Music + Recharging + Permanent Dock (not on windscreen) and it's so much better getting turn by turn through the car speakers

TomTom have had an iOS app for ages but it costs a fortune. Plus the dock is £70 plus but the iPod Touch one is £15 they take the piss, the app and dock cost more than a standalone unit. And I bet there is still a charge every year for map updates.
You don't need the dock for the Tom Tom app. The dock is only for devices without gps.

That was the point I failed to make. For the iPod Touch it is £15 for the device where you don't need it you pay 4 times that. They are greedy. But if it has life time map updates the software sounds good. I will always want offline maps just in case.

I was on a course many moons ago and one of the guys had just got a new iphone, he was acting like he'd just bought a cray supercomputer for his pocket, someone mentions some clip and he whips out his phone to stream it, so I got my N95 out and had it working before he'd even managed to to find the link.
Everyone gathered around me and the look on his face was was priceless.
He had bought an IPHONE!
How could some sweaty Nokia beat him?
Just to add insult to injury the lecturer has an N95 to and I set up a cracked version of Tomtom for him.
Yours hasn't got GPS sorry mate..one day maybe.

Guaranteed way to get a post massively downvoted on El Reg is to point out that Apple is just a tech company, not a panacea for all the world's ills.

Except that offline maps doesn't really work on tomtom, as it refuses to work without a data connection.... Or at least it did on jailbreak.

Crap, cheers for the heads up. I have just had a look at my purchased app and it looks like I purchased CoPilot UK back when I had an iPhone 3. It looks like I can install that again and upgrade to Version 8 for free so I will just try that instead.

Never had that issue, it whines that it prefers data but it's not essential. Just tried it in airplane mode on mine and it worked fine.
