Anyone else here REALLY hate their jobs?

Mainly because work spend a fortune on hotel & food costs as I'm working down south and my base is in manchester

The worst job I ever had was being an 'assistant matron' in a prep boarding school. The job title was wildly inaccurate, what it actually should have said was 'general dogsbody, skivvy and stand in PE teacher.' It was horrible and I stuck it out for 3 weeks. I quit when I got told off for consoling a 9yr old boy when he was homesick....all I was doing was sitting next to him with my arm round him, and the poor thing was sobbing uncontrollably. Bah, horrible place, horrible heartless people!

I've been nursing in great ormond street since 2000, qualified since 2003, and the job has its pros and cons. I love the fact that every day is different, that my job is quite skilled and that I get to work with children and their families and see kids get better, partly thanks to me.
I hate the hours, 13 12.5 hr shifts a month, at least 5 of which have to be nights and at least 1.5 weekends is shite. Its perfectly possible to live with someone and not actually see them for about 5 days, which is very wierd, and utterly crap. Its also horrible when kids die on you, specially seeing as we have a lot of long termers and you build a rapport with them and their families, and then they kark it...can be quite hard to deal with. Agressive, abusove parents are another downside, as is being constantly ill with ANYTHING going round you pick up off the kids, flu, colds, coughs, stomach bugs....you name it, we get it. The pay is shite for what we do as well, and since bloody labour have introduced the KSF, PREP and all that poo, we spend a lot of our free time proving that we've learnt enough in the last year to be allowed our measly pay rise thats actually lower than inflation.
Having said all that, I DO like the job...and to be honest, I find it hard to see myself doing anything else right now!

You're officially one of my heroes. My niece was in GOSH when she was two with a brain tumor and the nurses were all fekkin' brilliant. I, on the other hand, was useless; hospitals make me ill just being near them.

This is why I love my job!

I landed this straight from a massive stroke of luck when I went to this place for work experience and bagged the job there a month after.

Now i'm starting work on a foundation degree in Computing & Networks on top of my job and i'm also going to start working towards and MCSE and CCNA.

Things are going good for me atm.

Being a freelance contractor I tend to "jump ship" every few months to a new company, have just signed up for a 6 month stint at an Engineering firm in Leeds.

At the moment, I am hating it, I am that bored 90% of the time I spend it browsing the T'interweb or doing admin stuff for my own companies.

Am looking to stop contracting and concentrate on getting my own business up and running, I am fond of working 10 - 6 and not the phookin 8 - 5 rat-race.

I really want to be invloved more in IT but all my qualifications are in Accounting...and I don't want to have to go back down to a £25k odd salary and start all over again...

What are your accounting qualifications? Funnily enough, in the UK, accountancy gives you more routes into other careers than just about anything else; I know quite a few ex-accountants in marketing, management consultancy and yes IT. It also depends what you mean by "IT"...

I don't know what sort of path that would be open to me on the IT side...I don't really know what the options would be...I don't have any programming experience apart from the odd macro here and there. I do enjoy learning new software and mucking about with new hardware and that sort of thing but I have no idea where i could take that as part of a career development.

I think you should do some research in what aspects of IT you're into specifically and what you find you have a 'knack' for.

There are computing courses for near enough everything you could possibly want to do, numerous foundation degrees and Cisco/Microsoft courses.

Think about it, do you have the ability to pick up things very well in specific areas of IT?

Do you understand networking a lot easier than the average person? Or are you more a problem solver with a logical thought pattern?

Do you have the organisation skills of a server admin? Or perhaps even planning skills for a systems architect?

I'm assuming since you're an accountant that you're good with maths, so maybe you could be a network tech or perhaps a programmer?

My philosophy is just find what you're good at and get better at it.

Do you actually want to be a techie or just work in a technical environment? If its the former, then yeah, I'm afraid you're going to have to retrain and probably take that initial pay hit. But ask yourself, will you do all that training and then a few years down the line end up in a management role where you'll use those skills less and less anyway? If you've got a degree in Accountancy you've already got a management background and you'll probably find any technical career path will push you back in that direction unless you wilfully stop that happening. A big part of areas like network management or infrastructure management is about running a budget anyway.


NB. If you did retrain to be say, a C++ programmer, you'd probably find your accountancy background would definitely make you more employable in financial sectors though.

OT: I find my job a bit boring but find that if I compare it to other jobs (sitting in an office staring at a PC all day) it doesn't seem all that bad. That said, I do enjoy my job, just find it boring sometimes.

i walked straight into this network support job with no knowledge of networks at all, bods. don't know what most places are like but mine does a lot of training on the job and if you show a flair for it, they send you on all sorts of stuff

I found IT boring (... well I say IT, it was 1st line support crap, it hardly counts).

Dealing with mongos etc. I'd advise against any kind of job like that is it's pure poop, in my opinion ofc.

I guess something more speciallised could be fun.
