My cat is acting rather strange lately.

She doesn´t eat like she used to. Usually, she would eat the whole portion in one go. But now, she just eats some bits, then turns away. Eventually, she´ll eat the rest during the day or leave the rest in her bowl, very untypical behaivour.
Apart from that, she´s in good shape, playful as usual and purring and smooching etc.etc. Her teeth are looking ok to me, no infections or anything.

Any idea what might cause this kind of behaivour?

Does she go out? Maybe someone else is feeding her...
Has she recently stopped having to compete with an other cat / cats?
I also find that my cat eats less as it gets toward summer.

I wouldn't worry though so long as she is happy :)

Good questions from Roken there. I have a female cat about 12 years old myself. She's never eaten much at once, usually eats a little but quite often.

She's a bit skinny though, or maybe just that she's small, she always has been. I've always made sure that she has food, though I don't give her tin can food all the time (which she loves), but she always has dry food, and always water ofc.

Edit: And I've tried to give her "human food" (food which humans seem to like, not food made out of humans :p ), but she haven't liked it much so far.

:)

Hmm forgot to add, how old is your cat? Could she be in heat? (Cats' heat cycle usually start around spring.) The urge to multiply tends to make entities forget about nourishment. :p

By "entities" I meant "normal entities"... :p

Edit: All this mentioning of the word "entities" makes me a bit horny... I mean, say it many times to yourself... you know what I mean? Strangely Ezteq comes to mind too? Sry Ezteq, dunno how come! :)

As has been said:

How old is she?
Is she neutered?
Does she go outside?
Has she had the runs or is she not going to the toilet?
What food type is it, dry or wet?
Is she still drinking plenty of water? Is she drinking more water than normal?
Have you tried her with say a tin of tuna (my cat loved this, hated prawns, loved cheese and baked beans so try any or all of the above :) )

At the end of the day, a £25 trip to the Vets = peace of mind.

/em I miss my cad :(

Yup - what cadiva said - and at the end of the day, if you want peace of mind take her to the vets.
Also have a (gentle) feel of her stomach area - check there's no lumps or bumps there.

my cat used to do the same, go mad when it was dinner time then only eat a tiny bit and come back to it later, i wouldnt say its anything to worry about, though you may want to phone your vet to check.

Weee, thanks for the input :)

ok, some details:

How old is she? 3ish years

Is she neutered? yes

Does she go outside? nope

Has she had the runs or is she not going to the toilet? nothing wrong there, no runs, normal toilet cycles

What food type is it, dry or wet? wet food from the can

Is she still drinking plenty of water? Is she drinking more water than normal?

She doesn´t drink much and never did.

Have you tried her with say a tin of tuna (my cat loved this, hated prawns, loved cheese and baked beans so try any or all of the above )

I tried the tuna trick once and she loved it.. for abot 5 minutes. Then, I had to scratch it off my carpet. :)

Well, I`m not really worried since she seems to be allright apart from the food thingy. However, I had quite a number of cats in my life so far and I´ve never seen something like this, so Im just curious.
If she doesn´t change her habits in the next week or two, I`ll take her to a vet, just to check.

Could be something stuck in her throat, something small, which makes it unpleasant for her to consume food, while she does eat, she will quickly stop due to the unpleasant felling in her throat, ofc this is only a guess, and it might be unlikely, just as you said, if she don't change back soonish, then have a vet check her, just in case

Hunny take her to the vets, when a cat ( or any animal tbh) goes off their food its always a sign something is not right.

Like Cad said spending a few quid and it being a waste of time is a hell of a lot better than not going and finding out its too late.

Tie a towel around it's body, it won't help but it'll provide some good entertainment. :fluffle:

Looking at the symptoms you describe it's clear that the cause is one of 2 things:

1. She's pregnant and thus has developed very peculiar tastes. You can test this by feeding her banana and marmite pizza. If she happily munches it down then it is obvious this is the cause.

OR

2. She's taking speed and thus has no appetite for food. You can test this by playing dodgy trance music very loudly for 8 hours and seeing if she dances along for the full duration.

Just as an aside. I've found dry food to be much better in the long term for my cats.

I used to feed them wet food and they were awkward little buggers that wouldn't eat it once it started to dry out - ie lots of food chucked away.

I moved onto feeding them IAMS, which is recommended by vets cos of it's balance of minerals and all that sort of stuff.
Best thing is you can put it out and just leave it and once they get used to it (took my cats about a week mixing it in with wet food, slowly reducing the amount of wet etc) they usually get a better coat, are more active etc.

It's more expensive to start off with, I used to pay £20 for about 2 1/2 lbs (a month) I think it was, but it goes a hell of a lot further. Then I used to just give them a tin of tuna once a week so they were getting moist food as well as the dried.

Anyways, end of IAMS promotional speil, wonder if they'll give me a job in PR :)

I have 6 Cats, and I feed them a mix of biscuits and meat :p tbh they all prefer the dry and only ever seem to lick the jelly/gravy from the meat. They love cooked chicken breast as a treat aswell. They drink water and whiskas milk.

I was reading somewhere its bad to mix dry and wet food for a cat, that once a cat is settled on a certain type you shouldnt change.
