OK so I'm going to get an Andoid smartphone on PAYG (Giffgaff). There's no financial budget, and am looking to get the best all-rounder, preferably one with a better screen resultion & processor speed than my wife's HTC Wildfire.

Do I get one now - if so what would you advise, or hold out nearer till Xmas?

At this moment in time, it's probably still between the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation. If you like the HTC Sense in your wife's phone get the Sensation. If you don't, get the S2.

lol ching chong.

Or you could wait for the Samsung Nexus Prime...but I'm not convinced it's worth the wait...

Do you get any lag playing Angry Birds on the Sensation? Its pretty much unplayable on the Wildfire. Lags terribly. What about 3D rendering? When I upgrade I wanna be able to play pretty much any game lag-free.

You shouldnt get any lag on either the HTC or Samsung.
They are both superb phones.

I have the Samsung and it's excellent.

No, no lag at all. Been using it since it came out. Very nice phone.

The S2 is cracking - higher specs than the nexus oddly so bit of a no brainer.

While everyone is singing it's praises, and not without it's due, but you just need to be aware that it's a cheap-feeling phone. It is very light and plasticy. It does the job but it's not very substantial in your hands. It doesn't 'feel' like quality like the iPhone does.

I'm not trying to turn this into an Apple vs rest war. I'm just saying.

Sensation feels nice, I should add. Good quality, nice in the hand. Look better than the S2 IMO too.

WHERE ARE MY FONT OPTIONS, NOOOOOOO.

I do know what you mean, I bought a Casemate Barely There case for mine when I got the phone so I've only had experience of it with the case and it does add a bit of bulk to it. When I remove it from the case it is a bit *too* light.

edit - and disagree with Wazz but then I would, because it's Wazz and he's clearly wrong. The S2 is a stunning looking phone, I like the small radius rounded corners much more than the Sensation's general curviness.

the only problem i had with my s2 is that it's so light that it has flown out of my hands a couple of time, so remeber to hold it with a firm grip ;)

S2 is currently rocking my world, not as easy to pick up and use as my HTC was when I first bought it but with a bit of playing I've got it working nicely.

what about Sense v Touchwiz? I read one review which basically said Sense was much more aesthetically pleasing and a more enjoyable experience for the user. They also said the Sensation's keyboard beats the Samsung's hands down. Do you have to root the phone to change the keyboard on the S2?

tbh none of the outthebox keyboards are that good. get swype on any new android, along with a few other basics like go sms to replace the native versions.

Looks dated to me. Like an old iPhone.

Keyboard - 8pen
SMS - Go SMS Pro (though a lot of people like Handcent)

er HTC evo 3d, it's 3D!! And has TV out, did I mention 3d screen and twin lenses for..3D, also super wide screen and if it's like my HD Desire it kicks ass in the number chruncing department.

I've cracked the screen of my Desire today. O2 insurance offered my a HTC Mozart (WinPho7) or a Blackberry 9300 because the Desire isn't available any more.
I said neither thanks, I like Android.
They got back to me a little later with a choice of HTC Desire S, SE Neo or SE Xperia Arc.
I chose the Desire S.

I'd suggest a HTC Sensation XE or Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S for you Lamp. Both have their own unique points, and both aren't bad phones in their own right.

I would never buy HTC again. Shocking for build quality, awful for upgrading android, disastrous customer service.

Why not wait for the nexus prime Lamp?

Sensation build quality is awesome thx. Had no problems upgrading Android either, always quick and smooth. Never had to deal with customer services, as unlike iPhones they don't break constantly ;)

If I wanted to change the stock keyboard on the S2, would I need to root it?

I'm sure I've installed one from the .apk before without being rooted.

Sister in law had a S2 for a few days and hated it. I had the first one for a year and liked it until it started randomly crashing. I have a Sony Ericsson Xpiria play now which is an amazing phone, simply for the playstation controller. Does everything any other android phone does too. If you aren't interested in playing PS1 games on your phone then it is pretty pointless though, the official games are generally shit.

Gonna be really interesting to see what phones will be like in 5,10, 20 years from now...

Well compare an "ordinary" phone today with an ordinary phone from 10 years ago.
It's hard to pick one current phone from today but let's use an iPhone 4S for argument's sake.
The phone to have in 2007 was the iPhone.
The phone to have in 2004 was the Motorola Razr v3.
The phone to have in 2001 was the Nokia 6310i (and I still reckon it's one of the best phones ever for actually making calls).
The phone to have in 1999 was either Nokia's 7700 or 3210 depending on who you talk to.

In 10 years from now... it's hard to say. Would you have guessed 10 years ago that most phones would have fullsize touchscreens, HD cameras, full internet access as well as the ability to make phone calls and texts?
