i will be upgrading my computer soon and intend to buy a Asus P4C800-E DELUXE mainboard along with a P4 3.4 processor (along with some other bits and bobs).

while i was looking at the specs of the mainboard i noticed is said it supports up to P4 3.2.

so now the silly question...

does this mean that
a] if i put a P4 3.4 in it wont work. or
b]the processor will work but will only work as a 3.2

i know its a silly question but it might save me a few £'s if i have chosen the wrong processor (or cost me a few more £'s to get the right mainboard)

thanks for any help

Not that silly a question. A lot of motherboards can support higher cpus than stated through bios upgrades. Check your manufacturers web site.

Don't worry, it's perfectly compatible, you'll just need to make sure you've got the latest BIOS.

The 3.4Ghz chips are all relatively new, and manufacturers aren't allowed to announce support for frequencies which don't yet exist, which means that even though 3.4Ghz has been out for over a fortnight there are still going to be a few pages and places on the interwibble which need to adjust their records.
