Im looking to upgrade my processor and MB but I don't know if I should go for a AMD 64 3200 or the XP 3200, is there any real difference when playing games like Battlefield and UT 2004?

Any advice is welcome

What's your current spec?

The A64 3200+ is faster than the XP 3200+, but i'm not sure that it'll make a big difference in the games you mention.

Here is Anandtech's benchies in Doom 3, and you can expect the A64 3200+ to have around 78 fps, with the XP 3200+ with 67 fps.

Similarly, Tomshardware have UT2003 benchmarks here with the A64 being the quicker CPU.

Edit: - Sorry, forgot the A64 3200+ isn't for socket 939.

There's a nice comparison between the two
here.

Incidentally, up until this morning I'd always assumed the classification of AMD processors was in comparison to Intel CPUs (so an XP2200 is equivalent to a 2.2 GhZ p4). Never realised it was actually the comparison vs a tbird.

And I notice Intel have an (interesting) new classification system. Ho Hum.
