Hey, the actual content of this post is in no way as interesting as the title suggests, but please read on anyway...

My subwoofers on/off switch stopped working, thus rendering me unable to have sound on the pooter. I opened up the subwoofer and put tin foil around where the switch is used to complete the circuit, so now the sound automatically comes on whenever I plug it in. I was just wondering if this is dangerous and whether the tin foil may melt/catch fire/explode. Fank yoo!

I'll invalidate your warranty! If I don't die horribly in the next few minutes...

The tinfoil will hold fine, the danger is accidental electrocution. I'd make damn sure you switch it off when you leave the house too.

Surely they wouldn't have the entire voltage of the unit flowing through the on/off switch. Might just be a 5v connection to a relay or something. Got any pets you can try it out on?

Moving back to the topic...

That tin foil will degrade in time. It's not designed to handle voltages of high values, however saying that I've just come back from england wining 3-0 and heads cloudy, but I'd not leave speakers plugged in when you are away from PC.

no, technically you won't die. aliens will abduct you and preserve you in cryogenic suspension for all eternity while preforming tests on your still-conscious mind. NEXT!!

Bypassing the switch, in itself, is nothing to worry about (although I think it will contravene a BS standard on electrical appliances)....if it's done properly by a qualified electrician.

Using tin foil is .... is .... well, if it doesn't cause a fire you get to hear your sounds, if it does cause a fire, you're life is ruined. It's a no-brainer really.

There's not one insurance policy that would pay-out on this. Imagine coming home to a burnt-out house and having no insurance! No building, no contents, nothing. All for the cost of a new switch!

you can have mine too, but you'll have to pay for postage and packaging though.
