Mind wandered whilst in Maccy D's...

1.) Initialisms do not cause acronyms
2.) HIV is an initialism
3.) AIDS is an acronym

Therefore, HIV does not cause AIDS.

Discuss...

Actually it made me think of acronyms. AIDS was just the first one that sprang to mind.

Anyone want to work out any flaws ?

Actually if you understand it correctly you'll see it is entirely correct :)

I don't even understand "1.) Initialisms do not cause acronyms". I think you are being a little too high brow.

I do know a lot about HIV and AIDS though. I am edumacated, just not in whatever you are talking about. :p

Yeah think the "initialisms don't cause acronyms", while clear in itself, needs some contextplanation.

You mean the obvious flaw that the signifier isn't the same as the signified? In other words: 'AIDS' is an acronym, AIDS isn't.

Following similarly faulty reasoning a kilometre would be longer than a mile.

Also, I often pronounce initialisms as acronyms, because I like to annoy people.

How did everyone here treat DAOC? (those who played it I guess).

Personally I used it as an initialism.

It's a weird one really. I tend to use it a-sap, which is half and half.

Unless you want to put force behind it, then using a slow paced A S A P motherf*ckers is a lot more effective :p

This is turning into the cari-bean/ca-ribean/cariB-Bean thing again.

I think he was asking whether it was an initialism or an acronym...

I think that's what Seel was saying when he said half and half.

I wouldn't use it myself in regular conversations, since it implies to a degree that the person you're referring to is lazy and needs to be pushed to do it ina timely fashion.

"as soon as" or even "soon as" are commonly accepted these days and understood, the latter has the same number of syllables as "asap" so there's no excuse to use it. :)
