Where, exactly, are the personal insults? Please, quote them, bold them, dress them in tinsel. I wanna see them

Stu-: Your mate is a retard

Perplex: Go back to playing quake3

Perplex: Nevertheless, shut up

There's a few that aren't exactly friendly. Calling someone a retard is pretty personal.

Saying that I should "go back to playing Quake3" implies a whole shit load of stuff. That I'm dumb enough to play Q3 instead of something more intelligent? That I'm inisignificant to you and should just get out of your sight and go back to playing computer games?

And telling me to shut up is just plain rude.

I felt Stu-'s first post was completely over the line. No need for the tone of it at all.

hmmmm

I'd consider "you are a fucking cunt" to be an insult.

"Go back to playing quake3" is rather witty and amusing (to me:D)

Different strokes for different folks tho I suppose

I was actually sitting here wondering how long it would be before you popped in with a q2.uk dig. Run along sonny, adults talking here

Right, just to back up Kenny. ADSL can transmit data upto 8Mbits.
Want proof:
http://www.bt.com/bttj/vol18no3/enrico/fulltext.htm
that a tech doc from the BT webpage that they don't normally allow you to link to. About half way down the page is a graph, showing the ADSL speeds.
Secondly, 50Mbits is currently the maximum speed for any DSL technology. You have to be within 1km of an exchange, and has been tested in the states. Its called VDSL - go to the industrial stantards organisation for a tech round up.

Next, BT are f*ing consumers up the arse on a regular basis, but thats not all their fault. BT is run by shareholders these days, thus they need to run a profit. BT origionally wanted DSL to cost about twice as much as it does now, but oftel stopped them charging that much. (again, I've seen the BT doc on this, but that came from someone in BT).
Oh and lastly, I did my final year of my degree in economics looking at the competitive effects of BT, and they are a bunch of arses.

Thankyou lovedaddy. So the person I spoke to wasn't speaking out of his arse about having 8MBit ADSL. And Stu- and Perp, Maybe now you want to get YOUR facts straight?

Kenny. Your mate is shitting you. He doesn't have 8mbit DSL because BT wouldn't trial something they had NO intention of running live in any way shape or form.

Secondly, 8mbit DSL will only run at an absolute maximum cable distance of 9000feet (2.5km to you). Take an operable overhead into consideration and you are talking 2km. Ok, now as you can well appreciate, BTs cables don't run in a straight line to your house. They have to follow streets, that would mean in all your 'mate' would have to live within 1km straight line (as the crow flies) to be within a realistic distance for utilising 8mbit adsl.

Lovedaddy, VDSL will run at 51mbit if you are within 1000feet of the exchange. That's 300 meters to you. Hardly 1km. Oh, and that's also the absolute maximum cable distance, so you could say 250 meters to be safe.

Thanks and fuck off

Technology Maximum Distance from CO Maximum Speed
ADSL / G.lite ~18,000 Feet / 5.4 Km 8 Mbps Down / 1 Mbps Up
SDSL ~18,000 Feet / 5.4 Km 1.5 Mbps Symmetric
IDSL ~ 18,000 to 36,000 Feet / 10.8 Km 144 Kbps Symmetric
HDSL ~15,000 Feet / 4.5 Km 1.5 Mbps Symmetric
VDSL ~4,000 Feet / 1.2 Km ~50 Mbps Down / ~8 Mbps Up

Right, there you go, the list as provided as drawn up as industry standard.
VDSL - 1.2km. This is using copper wire, as a direct line from the CO (exchange), and working in ideal condition.
Any other questions?

I never said he was my "mate". I said he was a collegue and he's not the sort of person to lie, it was a business conversation about something un related to ADSL. He was having problems reciveing an important email I was sending to him and we stayed on the phone till the email arrived at his end and we got chatting while we waited, about telecoms in general.
I never said he was more than 50ft away from any sort of exchange did I? I never mentioned how far away from the exchange he was. Where's the relevance of saying it won't work if he's more than 2km away?
Also to contradict you...you say they wouldn't trial if they had no intention of marketing it. So the very fact that he HAS an 8mbit ADSL line points to the fact that they WERE considering it but upon TESTING found there to be more "viable" methods (in BT's opinion.) He's not just some pleb on a switchboard, he's a senior executive and I'm sure has more than a few contacts below him. Enough to get him on any such trial.
I'm sure he has no intention of "slagging off BT" as he earns a very good living out of them. He was just simply stating facts.

To echo your own sentiments...

Thanks and fuck off.

Care to tell us what's that got to do with anything Morpheus? Ah, I see, you think that's where he mentions his "source of information"?

You have a habit of walking into debates that are dead / dying don't you?

Lovedaddy has already shown perp and others to be working off of false ideas / assumptions. He has pointed out web pages and quoted industry standards to prove a point. So where's yours?

No, I just wanted to highlight how ignorant and stupid you are. :)

To be honest, kenny is fucking dense. As proven in various other threads.

And lovedaddy, you're wrong son.

VDSL
VDSL offers the highest speeds, but is only in limited commercial use. For short distances, 1000 to 4500 feet, it promises data rates of up to 50mbps.

And the URL to prove my data http://www.dslreports.com/information/kb/family+of+standards/VDSL

Looks like we were both right. Seems VDSL operates between 1kft and 4.5kft. There must be a substandard defined for the lower distance, or else why bother including it?

Oh, and for someone apparantly at uni, you need to learn to fucking reference sonny. PROVE your data sources

First off, I've finished my degree (and have been so now for over a year).
Secondly, my first post I did prove that ADSL was capable of 8MBits (and included a url to bt's website).
The second proof that I gave, I quoted my source (but couldn't be arsed to find the url).
So, the question remains, how exactly am I wrong?

Can't be arsed to read all the posts in this thread but here is something:

My brother is working in Hong Kong. He has got ADSL over there and he pays just under £15 per month.

His bandwidth is 1.5 meg DL and 512kbps UL.

I pay £40 to BT for 512DL/256UL.

As far as I am concerned BT smell heaps.

/did that make any sense??:puke:

This doesn't mean any thing...but tbh I never said anything about the bandwidth...I mentioned that it couldn't and most probably never will be £15 a month.

Bollox to the lot of you.

I'm fed up of this. I come here day after day and read the same tired shit of people calling people cunts, fuckwits etc. Telling each other to fuck off "cos yu don now sheet".

I won't be posting for a while. I leave you to make twats of yourself all on your little lonesomes. I'll be sitting in the sidelines laughing that I've now learned and got the sense not to get involved with arguing with a bunch of kids who haven't got a clue.

It was fun for while. It's also been a quite steep learning experience at what kind of kiddies really do play games.
