I don't have any disaster stories and I didn't ruin any part of my life due to DAOC, however since quitting it a few months ago I most certainly do regret ever starting it, and don't intend to ever play any MMO again. Like many people who spent a lot time on the game I convinced myself that I wasn't addicted in a bad way, rather I simply had loads of free time and chose to fill it with DAOC. With a gap year and then first year uni I definitely did have a lot of free time, but what I really regret was spending so much of it on DAOC. I did socialise, did go out, did keep in contact with old friends, did do work, and did pursue other interests - but none of these to the extend I would have liked to. Basically DAOC encouraged me to be complacent and just cruise through life, rather than taking opportunities and making something better of it. I now feel like I largely wasted the two years I spent playing DAOC. I was never depressed and never lost anything I already had due to DAOC, but the game became a significant part of my life and I simply lost interest in many other things. When I was bored or had a lot of spare time I didn't think of something productive to do, something interesting to try, or somewhere new to go, rather I just logged in to DAOC instinctively.

While I always knew that I spent too much time on the game, I always managed to justify it to myself and it's only in retrospect that I can see just how detrimental it was. I know that many people do indeed play DAOC and other MMOs in a perfectly healthy way but I also know that many others lose a lot out of life by ever starting MMOs, and it's something that those people will only fully appreciate after quitting.

Im pretty addicted to Daoc i must say. But i tend to have periods when i play alot and periods when i dont play at all. So, you could say im very addicted every now and then. And sometimes not at all.
