ok, it seems that WindowsImageBackup must be in the root of the drive you're restoring from or the utter shitness that is windows system restore will not see it. w.t.f.?
lol in recovery mode it won't let me set an IP address in an administrator shell even if I ctrl-c/v the example it says filename, directory name or volume label is incorrect lolwtf
ok after several dozen tries faffing about with the interface I discovered this:
telling Windows 7 to * look * on the network for the share will not get it to work because there is no DHCP in my network.
BUT!!!!
while it is looking the interface is online and the netsh commands to set the interface's ipv4 configuration will magically work where earlier the pile of shit that is windows refused to do anything.
SO: network is now configured and HEY PRESTO the recovery program suddenly DOES INDEED see the share with the backup on it. as if by magic!! the cunt.
and now: it tells me I must REBOOT because even though it's a backup recovery program it somehow needs to boot my computer and I have to go through the pain of getting the lan interface online again ALL OVER AGAIN!!!! WHEEEE!!!!
ok, it's completely refusing to restore the image even though it sees it just fine now. I've gone in to DISKPART to see if I could reset the plextor's partition table or mark shit active or something, seeing as the restore seems to desire a C:. anyway, I'm about to give up and roll a fresh install. I'm a bit bummed out that my preconceived impression of windows system backup / restore is so far being completely spot on.
ok, after faffing about with Windows Backup some more I have come to the conclusion that while it may work under certain conditions, it does not do so with MY conditions. So, I downloaded and installed that Macrium thing that Cal was talking about, and quelle surprise, it worked straight away, and copied a disk image of my windows drive to my NAS.
Then I used it to create a rescue media cdrom. Now I only have to man up and test it. According to the vids on the internets it's piss easy. We'll see about that, given that my NAS is directly attached to my computer with no DHCP server or whatever. Ofc, you get a choice of rescue media -windows or linux- and naturally I chose linux so I expect to be able to mess with network interface settings a little bit.
tbh I'm a bit scared of it. even though the only thing on this windows is steam and two games, I'm really not up for messing about installing w7 yet again :-/
Go for it teeds. It takes about an hour to reinstall windows and you can spend 99.9% of that watching porn on one of your other 'puters, so it shouldn't be a problem.
