Although I may get flamed for my next statement I do actually feel that it contributed to my parents success and that is that fact they are devout Catholics who believe they only have one shot at marriage, and fear of growing old alone and outcast has contributed to how they are... I used the word fear... and yes Catholicism is great at breeding fear and guilt but it seemed to work for their generation.. all my aunts and uncles both sides have stayed together and worked through their differences till death do they part.... For my generation and ones to follow this is certainly not the case.. and although I relish the fact I can choose freely how to live my life, I have to question whether their way is better..

In no way am I saying that you need to be Catholic for a relationship to work.. just that it worked for them..

It may have worked for them and countless others, but how many people have stay in terrible marriages and been absolutely miserable due to cultural/religious pressure? I expect the success/failure of long-term relationships like your parents has far more to do with other factors.

True - but the flipside of that is that people have become more selfish - relationships are generally about compromising on day to day stuff but modern culture emphasises the individual.

The old cultural/societal pressures were just another reason for people to go back and work at it - which is what every marriage needs.

The above is so true.. the communication bit.. but age is important also and lets face it most here have been totally desensitised by porn so expectations are higher....

In my opinion women want to feel needed, romanced, made to feel special... the moment they start feeling pressured or that something is expected they will tend to go cold.... It is acceptance that we are different and talking about it.. think about some of the generalisations:
