5 musicians that you think others should hear

well i'm sure we all have artists that we feel others should listen to and may appreciate, whethar it's the message in their songs or their pure talent or skill or for what ever reason. help spread the names of artists that have captured you.

I've put 5 into the title just as a guideline, feel free to submit as many as you want or a select few.

1. Brett Dennen - DEFINATLY!!! listen to this guy
2. Bob Schneider - A friend one described his music as "pretty lyrics"
3. M. Ward - Just magnificent
4. Rhett Miller - Not sure what to say about this guy, honestly i'm torn on how i feel about his music but i think it's worth a listen

I guess those 4 would be described in the whole folksie acoustic genre but from the entire perspective really from blues to soulful to softer more thought provoking.

5. Matisyahu - A bit different to the others, this guy is very roots reggae orientated but a bit different with hasidic (Strict orthodox Jewish) reggae with a powerful message of love and purity.


Honestly if i was to suggest just one of these, i think I'd say Brett Dennen right now, going to be amazing watching his music grow.

In no particular order, though hard to limit to 5. Quite possibly household names, but since i don't know what others listen, might not be:

1: Bobby McFerrin -Well this is an old school feel good guy, but wroth hearing out if not heard.
2: Powerman 5000 - If you liked White Zombie, Rob Zombie, his brother(if i remember correctly) makes some really decent tunes in the similar area of industrial metal.
3: Q-Tip - Old School hiphop artist. Vivrant thing can be found on youtube atleast.
4: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Big band music at it's finest.
5: Flogging Molly - Really nice "irish folk punk(i don't like genres but heck...)" music.

And yes, they look at me weird in metal pubs...

Ok so you are saying there isn't a huge social group thats developed, i.e. Indie kids, who straighten their hair, wear skinny jeans and leather jackets who all like the same music?

They are the only ones who really like Pete Doherty/jump to defend.

Meh. Could make a lot of comments about some of the ephemeral people listed here as 'must-hear' musicians, but here instead are 5 people many probably haven't heard, but should. 5 genuinely important musicians, people who changed everything that came after them.


1: Robert Johnson.

This man IS the Blues. The real fucking I-worked-on-a-plantation deal. Only recorded 29 songs before his death, but they were the blueprint for so much of the music we hear now it's crazy. An absolutely vital cornerstone of modern music, and someone that everyone should listen to for that very reason. It's not overstating the case to say that you've not heard the blues until you've heard this man.


2: Miles Davis.

Yes, it's jazz. Deal with it. His 'Kind Of Blue' album is a bona fide all-time classic of 20th-century music, and one of the greatest chillout albums ever made by anyone, anywhere, ever. His 1969 'Bitches Brew' album shook the entire jazz world up and laid the foundations for much of what followed - including the cut'n'paste sampling approach of hip-hop - and has been sampled more than almost any other music apart from one or two James Brown songs and Led Zeppelin's 'When The Levee Breaks' drum sound.


3: Frank Zappa.

I can't think of any other musician who could do so many different things and do them all so well - humour ('Bobby Brown Goes Down', 'Valley Girl', 'Tinseltown Rebellion', 'Titties'n'Beer'), nigh-unplayable fusion ('Five-Five-Five', 'The Black Page', 'Sinister Footwear'), avant-garde orchestral ('The Yellow Shark', 'Bogus Pomp'), political satire ('Dickie's Such An Asshole', 'Republicans', 'Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk') and straightforward beautiful music ('Watermelon In Easter Hay', 'Oh No', 'Yo Mama', 'Black Napkins')...and still find time to be recognised as a great guitarist in his own right, and run for President, and almost become the American cultural attache to Czechoslovakia (a move opposed by the very Republican goverment he'd slagged off so much). He also had so many great musicians in his band (because his music was often so ferociously difficult to play) that 'ex-Zappa' was about the highest recommendation a player could have. Few musicians genuinely deserve the term 'genius'; Frank Zappa was one of those who did.


4: Igor Stravinsky. Often described as the greatest composer of the last century, his 'Rite Of Spring' was so avant-garde and weird when it was premiered in 1911 that it actually caused a riot (in a classical music gig!). Stravinsky touched upon just about every element of classical music that had existed up until then and used them all in his own fusion of styles and ideas. He's the man who got me into classical music, and without that I'd have been missing out on so much incredible music. And anyone who can get a classical music audience literally punching each other out can't be all bad. Essential works: 'The Rite Of Spring', 'The Firebird', 'Symphony Of Psalms', 'The King Of The Stars'. Listen to it with an open mind and have your horizons seriously broadened; like many people raised on a broadly-rock diet (as most of us are these days) I thought classical music was all Mozart/Beethoven nice tinkly-polite tedium...Stravinsky changed all that for me.


5: Eddie van Halen.

Most of the rock guitar playing you hear now is to a greater or lesser degree informed by this man, whose first album with Van Halen in 1978 kicked the entire rock guitar world up the arse. Frank Zappa said Eddie had 're-invented' the rock guitar...certainly you started to hear his ideas, especially the two-handed tapping stuff, turning up in a lot of players' work afterwards. Other players (Billy Gibbons, Brian May and Steve Hackett being the most notable) had used both hands to fret notes before Eddie, but nobody had come remotely close to what he did with it. Listening to 'Eruption' now, it's hard to believe this was done almost 30 years ago. At the moment, Eddie seems to be having serious problems with alcohol again, but nothing will take away from his massive contribution to rock music overall, and the guitar in particular. There are many incredible guitarists out there, and I wouldn't say Eddie was my own personal favourite player, but if you're looking for a true paradigm shifter of a player, one who changed everything that came after...even more than Chuck Berry, Charlie Christian, Andres Segovia or Jimi Hendrix, it's got to be Eddie van Halen.
