Meh. Could make a lot of comments about some of the ephemeral people listed here as 'must-hear' musicians, but here instead are 5 people many probably haven't heard, but should. 5 genuinely important musicians, people who changed everything that came after them.

I dont think this thread is about the origins of music nor is anyone elses opinions here any less valid than your own, personally i didnt like Miles Davis at all but loved the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker

1) Louis Armstrong - mentioned above, greatest jazz composer ever imo despite the shit he went through

exactly the point of this thread, it's not (just) about innovative artists or ground breaking musicians but rather music that you appreciate whethar it's a rinsed beat but simply the lyrics are though provoking, or the pitch at which they sing or anything from the drum solos to the hooks. its just about the music.

Going to throw ben harper into here, amazing musician

....5. Matisyahu - A bit different to the others, this guy is very roots reggae orientated but a bit different with hasidic (Strict orthodox Jewish) reggae with a powerful message of love and purity.....

2) Subfocus, top class DJ and producer constantly tearing up dancefloors.
3) TC, sick sick producer every DJ in DnB is slipping a couple of his tunes into their sets.
4) Logistics, hmm because I love to come home and chill out to his music
5) Andy C, no one can mix like this guy.. never fails to put on a good show, he is taking drum and bass to new places.

Im also into reggae alot, thought I wouldnt name the "heavy" reggae artists tho, since people might not really like em.. But if you're into reggae, check out some Anthony B stuff, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse etc.


Im not sure about Gentleman, well, he is good and all.. He, however, did not impress me live. This was 3 years ago tho. Bring on some old roots reggae artists, like Burning Spear!

Dilinja is just sick, gutted i missed him last term, but i saw Andy C on thursday gone, was an amazing set at the apollo, completely dominated and ahd the crowd right where he wanted them.

Yeh Zenith, Anthony B is immense, and Steel pulse are amazing, theyve lasted a long long time and put quality concious songs out for a long time. Check Morgan Heritage, theyre amazing aswell

true about the more heavy reggae but i think Jah Cure and Garnettes songs can be appreciated by all, Jah Cure has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard with such passion it's petrifying.

To Darksword, yeah, Jah Cure is amazing. Also check out Ras Shiloh, I discovered when he got togheter with Gentleman and made Blessing to Jah. Beautiful voice.

But man, I just remembered. One of the truly greatest time of my life was at the Uppsala Reggae Festival last year. Don Carlos, Groundation and The Congos. Man. If you havent heard anything of them, do it NOW. The three bands with the best leadsingers ever in reggae. Was a blast seeing The Congos leadsinger ( with totally white dreads and beard ) with oldman Don Carlos just owning the crowd.
