Ok, I've had a dig around on PC Worlds website and have spotted the Casio QV-R40 which is a 4MP camera @ £169.89 (£80 off).

Rather oddly, this camera doesn't appear on http://www.Casio.co.uk/digitalcameras - only their american site...

For starters it's a true 4MP camera (i.e. it has a real 4.13MP CCD) which is pretty good considering, none of this digital interpolation here... Well, not at first anyhow. The camera has 3x Optical Zoom and 3.2x Digital (9.6x effective) which means it's going to start creating pixels and losing image quality beyond 3x.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is a true UK model though, I can't find any reviews of it, even at dcmag.co.uk ( http://www.dcmag.co.uk/review/reviewcategory.asp?RGN=2&RCN=13&v=1&sp= ).

At that kind of price though, you can't really go too wrong :)

seems ok going by the reviews but as luck would have me local pcw store is all sold out:/ may have try and drive to leeds before offer ends
Call them in advance and if they have stock I think you should be able to ask them to hold one for your. From what I've been told this camera is being advertised on TV so demand could be quite high :(

well just got one, been snapping away all day and been impressed with the quality, just one grip tho, dont think anything needs improving , but havint to remove the batteries to charge up is a bit iffy defo woulda been bettey if it had a cradle like me logi mx700 mouse.

also, are there any differences in memory cards for cams? pcw had a few different versions/makes and as this is me first step in the world of digi cam was not sure which one is better.

Ah, excellent, glad you found on fella.

The battery thing has its pros and cons. Charging the batteries outside of the camera means you can buy a second set to charge while the camera is in use, but travelling with it means you'll always need to lug the charger too. My last camera charged the batteries in the camera body, which i was fine with til I got my canon, which eats them for breakfast even with an external flash - so now being able to buy a second charger and 2 spare batteries lets me keep them on rotation and make sure I've got power to shoot all day if necessary.

With regards to memory there's a huge difference between some of the brands. Compactflash particularly gives the choice of mechanical storage (microdrives) standard solid state memories and high-density cards which can move data around up to 40x faster.

A faster card means quicker save times and makes it quicker to get files off when hooking into your pc. It will also make browsing photos on the camera itself a much easier task.

As the casio is SD/MMC you've a more limited choice, but that said it's worth shopping about. There are sites dedicated to benchmarking memory cards for cameras, though currently the few I know focus on compactflash. Best to chuck something into Google and see what you can dig up.
