However, a spokesman admitted that the scheme will be "self-enforcing", with no additional resources allocated

rofl so no one will do it then, good idea tbh

always wondered about speedlimits, rarely do people ever seem to follow them unless there's a speed camera or a copper about, the rest of the time everyone seems to go whatever speed the want to go at, regardless of the limit.

people who drive at a sensible speed dont need signs to tell em its a built up area. people who need signs, probably cant read them, and ignore them anyway.

tho in the case of portsmouth, id vote for a minimum 70 mph limit, might cleanse some of the scum from this earth:worthy:

that is exactly why we need more mobile hidden speed cameras. what you just said is the reason why bright yellow speed cameras at the side of the road are a joke. around here you get prats overtake you in a 30 when your doing 30 it really dose make me mad.

they should worry about making people do the limit befor canging it.

About all the residential area's in the Netherlands are 30km zones.
Main city roads are 50km/h, rural roads are 80km/h
Motorways are 100km/h and highways are 120km/h.
There's really no timedifference in driving from/to somewhere now compared to before we had the 30km residential zones, and it's a lot more comfortable concerning safety and noise. I for one, am content with it.

The idea of visible speed cameras are actually NOT to catch people speeding, but to make them AWARE that if they DO speed they are on camera. Therefore, it's to stop them before they go ahead and do it. After all, even if you get a picture of someone doing 60 in a 40 zone, that kid they ran down is still gonna be just as dead...

Myself, I stick to the limits for the most part. there's odd occasions I drift over, but only when it's clear, high visibility all around and definitely safe. and even then, never by much. And I'm extra cautious in built up areas, especially with blind areas, after going round a corner once to come face to face with a BMW in the wrong lane, and seeing some of the people round my village going round at silly speeds when there's a lot of cars park just round blind bends.

You have to see howthats stupid though as people dont think oh yeah its 30 i will not speed any more. They slow down past the camera and then right back up to 40 50. With cameras advertised like they are they are a joke, if people started getting fines and points through the post with out knowing where they were caught it would make them alot more speed consious than just slowin down for 100 yards befor and after the big yellow camera.

like I said, that won't bring the people that could be run down by that speeding person back to life, caught or not. A few deterents in the bad areas means less incidents and deaths. a few hidden cameras just means you know who it was that ran someone down.

your missing the point

as stand people slow down at the camera because they know its there.
then they speed back up and are doing 50 again. as the advert says hit them at 30 80% chance they live, over 40 80% chance of death.

So they pull away from the camera hit some one they are dead. But if the cameras where hidden they would not be able to drive at 50 between cameras like they do now. Forcing them to do 30 the whole time. Its simple really. So cameras that could be anywhere would make people obey the limit. Big yellow things at the side of the road = people slow down past them. Moving the accident blackspots down the road rather than removing them altogether.

if the cameras are hidden, they just do 50 anyway. they've not been caught yet, so they don't know about it. they hit someone. bang, dead pedestrian.

Driver number 2 however, they see a camera, slow down and succesfully avoid running down a load of kids.

solution is not less visible cameras, but more visible cameras, to get rid of the "speed up spots" after the cameras. though the areas people speed up again, round here at least, are usually after the areas you get lots of pedestrians around anyway.

In the UK, the speed cameras need to be visible by law - if you get caught but can prove that the camera was hidden from your view, you wont get charged.

Ok this is getting frustrating now.

If you have hidden cameras after the first few morons get caugh word gets around and people start to slown down. They are not effictive from day one maybe but in the long run the possibility of a camera being there mkes you drive slower than when you know there is a big yellow thing at the end.

With vsables people slow down to them and speed up right past them.

I think that has changed now as long as the road has the signs the mobile ones can go anywhere
