OK there is a easier way of settling this,

If you dont think .(9) = 1 then multiply 1/9 by 9

1/9 = .111...

Working it out fractionally
9 x 1/9
= 9 x 1 / 9
= 9/9
= 1/1
= 1

what does .111... x 9 equal?

and it may be more convinent to say 0.999 recurring is 1

but its isnt

or it would be 1 not 0.999 recurring

it is 0.9 recurring but it is equal to 1. i guess thats the right way to put it. the same way as Pi π is equal to 3.14159(and so on). some things just have multiple names while being equal. as is the case with 1 and 0.(9)

I didn't think of expressing it that way.

Same applies with 1/3 = 0.3 recurring

3 x 1/3 = 1 therefore 0.3333... x 3 = 0.9999.. = 1

0.9......9 does not = 1.0........0

but the point isn't about fractions into decimles and how its doesnt work :p

the fact is 0.99999999 recurring as a number is a number, its not one or it woudn't be 0.99999999 recurring

i mean i could say that and acorn is tecnically a tree

but id be wrong

and so is bugz

+ i think he smokes cock*

* may or may not be true

probly is tho

0.999... and 1 are just different forms of the same number.

Same reason why 0.33... and 1/3rd are the same - same 'real' value - different forms.

Time to pull the good old one...

7-2=5
(7-2) (7-5) = 5 (7-5)
49-35-14+10 = 35-25
49-35-14 = 35-25-10
7 (7-5-2) = 5 ( 7-5-2)

7=5

difference is 1/3 isn't a number, its a value

0.999... and 1 are both decimal numerals

whereas 1/3 is a fration and is equal to 0.333...

you don't need to keep explaining the theory cos i get it but the difference is 0.333........ doesnt equal 0.999... it equals 1, so 0.999... doesnt eqaul 1

0.333... just doesnt multiply into 0.999...

as i said in my first post to get a whole numebr from 0.999..... you would ahve to mulitply it by whateva i.e 0.111... x 9 = 1
0.333... x 3 = 1

0.666... x 3 = 2

or 0.666... x 1.5 = 1

none of these are eqauling 0.999...

so its flawed at its most basic level

0.3333 recurring x 3 = 0.999 recurring = 1

1/3 x 3 = 3/3

Since 0.99... = 1 through proof, we can say thus that 0.333 x 3 = 0.9999... or 1.

I don't see what's wrong?

2nd to 3rd line ;)
eh?
Both lines are correct.

2nd line multiplies the original terms by (7-5)
3rd line is just expanding the terms.

Both lines are correct.

( 7 - 2 ) x ( 7 - 5) is evaluated as ( 5 x 2 ).

It doesn't follow the same rules as algebra AFAIK because those values can be expressed under a common ruleset - real numbers.

No!
I just multiply both sides by (7-5) and as long as I do it to both sides, it´s all fine. :)

again:

7-2=5 -> *(7-5)

(7-2) (7-5) = 5 (7-5) -> expanding both sides

49-35-14+10 = 35-25 -> -10

49-35-14 = 35-25-10 -> reducing both sides

7 (7-5-2) = 5 ( 7-5-2) -> reducing the equal parts of the multiplication

7=5

Trust me, the "trick" is more subtle. :)

0.3333 recurring x 3 = 0.999 recurring = 1

1/3 x 3 = 3/3

Since 0.99... = 1 through proof, we can say thus that 0.333 x 3 = 0.9999... or 1.

I don't see what's wrong?

well 0.333... isnt the same as 0.33333333

so when u times it by 3 its = 1 not 0.99999999

they are different numbers

the fact its 0.333........ isnt a real number, nor is 0.111... or 0.666... as thier fractions that can't be depicted by decimal numeracy

hence recurring being the closest (yet still inacurate) way of decimalising them

best way to prove this is to get a caculator, divide 1 by 3 then x it by 3
u get 0.999... which is incorrect as all you've done is reverse it so it should =1

all that proves is that a calculator isnt infinate and can't x a recurring number.

0.999... on a caculator =1

no where else, cos we have concious thought and realise 0.333... x 3 = 1

a calculator doesn't

that doesn't mean that 0.999... = 1

that means caculators R 2 B DUMB

three dots are the end of a decimal indicates its recurring btw.

0.99... = 0.99 recurring - just another way of expressing it.

P.S - Gohan you were a twat in your post. Neg rep for people who can't argue respectfully but resort to insulting - its childish.

You aren't making a lot of sense. We are arguing that 0.99 recurring = 1.

P.S - (1 / 3) x 3 = 1 on my calculator :)

edit: Thor - still working on it :)

I never said 0.99 recurring was a real number.

I simply said 0.99 recurring = 1.

That is the case. I'm not arguing anything else here lol.

P.S - rude little bugger aren't you?

but thats still not true

0.999... REPRESENTS 1

but it doesnt equal it

ie 0.999... x 2 doesnt = 2

by saying it equals 1 your giving it a true vaule as a number which its vaule is 0.999... ALWAYS the smallest decimal away from 1

so not equal too
