I need to stop smoking, I am now finding it hard to breathe and am constantly having to take deep sighs to breathe. I have tried everything on the market (inhaler, patches, chewing gum, nasal spray etc) and have never managed to quit before.........I have never *really* wanted to quit before in all honesty.

I am now thinking that Zyban may be the only way to do this. Has anyone ever tried this? I am fairly concerned about the depression thing, as in, I had it when I was younger (supposedly) and Zyban is meant to be a risk to people with mental problems (I still have them I am sure many will agree).

Any advice on this drug luvs?

Quitting

If you *really* want to stop, for yourself, rather than anyone else, then you might be surprised how easy it feels.
I had many many attempts to stop, because I *should*, for my wife cus she hated it, for my kids to still have a dad later on, etc... but I was always doing it for someone else.
When it came down to it...as soon as I wanted to stop, because *I* felt I wanted to, it was surprisingly easy.
Having said that, take ANY help you can get...I was getting more nicotine through alternative means than smoking, than I had ever had before....Patches, nasal spray, chewing gum...use 'em all!
Good luck, and try to remember why your doing it!

With the use of an inhaler i managed to give up smoking in two weeks.

It took me a week to kick the nicotine addiction and another week to break the wanting something in my mouth addiction (no rubbish nob jokes please, thats so 1980's).

If you really want to give up you will, i smoked 20-30 a day for 20 odd years.

Its looking more like I need to give up now. I still don't want to as such but when my breathing is like this it is starting to worry me.

I am going to book in to see the ciggie nurse at the doctors so I can seek advice.

I really want to be around to help my son buy his first car etc and I now feel like I won't be alive if I carry on like this.

Scary stuff this life business.

It genuinely is the willpower to quit, if you don't want to quit you wont no matter what you buy.

So, starting this sunday evening you shall be smoking no more.
K?

Allen Carrs 'stop smoking'

I am sure it does work, but Im equally sure its the individuals motivation that makes it happen.
if YOU want to, you can
if you dont really want to, then there isnt a magic potion that will make it happen

*disclaimer* Zyban wasnt available when i stopped, just maybe thats the magic potion!

books and things, I dunno about that. You have to want it, be scared to death or both. I was both. Please do your utmost to stop smoking Tremzor! It's going to be really really really hard to get the monkey off your back, I'm not kidding, but it can be done. It can be done. If you really stick at it you will make it.

I smoked two packs a day for 10 years and quit, my mum (yeah really) smoked a pack a day for 50 (!) years and quit. She's double 'ard though, unlike me :)

I've just sat and gone cold turkey.

Simple as that.

Aint smoked since last monday so far, so thats a week and counting.

I'm suprised about the withdrawal symptoms, so far all ive had is the feeling of somethings missing. That being said I have only been smoking for 2 years so I think thats maybe why it's been easier so far.

Honest to god to you lot still smoking, get out while ya still can! :D

trem m8, you know I love yas and all right?

If you want to give up smoking, just fucking stop, and stop being so soft.

I gave up you-know-what without any help, surely you can manage cigerettes!

Exactly throd, you quit something much harder than ciggies so I guess in your mind the ciggies would be a breeze.

I could quit drinking at any time(not the same as your thing throd but a thing I can quit), and I may well do to help with quitting cigs.

I have still got up today and had one as soon as my eyes were open and all I can think about is I can't breathe.....how fucked up is that!!

Samm is ringing the doctors today so at the very least I will get cheap patches.

I had the same thing really. i gave up smoking when I was 28, and started when I was about 16.
On a sunday morning Id go downstairs and get out of breath climbing over the stairgate at the bottom over the stairs :)
My point is though, this helping stuff is placebo for the greater part of the time. You woke up this morning and had a fag because they were there. Chuck the fucking things away, and dont buy any more, thats the easiest start.Accept your going to have cravings, and feel a bit sick, and get irrationally grumpy at times. Thats part of it. thats because you've been putting noxious addictive chemicals in your body for years. But it will pass, in weeks or months , but it will pass. Uncle Peter aint coming along with his magic wand disguised as "patches" or whatever to make it easy for you. It aint easy mate. but its just something you've got to do :)

:D

This must be the third time I have done a 'OMGZ I MUST QUIT' thread but this time its serious. Its the strangest thing though, when I exercise I aren't out of breathe its when I do nothing that it shows....strange.

Thanks for the support guys and I would like to warn the KEA boys in advance of my impending uber moods(worse than usual).

Jup - Don't buy that book, let me read it then you can have mine, it may be a pile of shit.

All it takes is willpower. Patches etc might help make you less of a grumpy sod, but they wont do a thing without the willpower.

Quitting is one thing, staying that way is another. I had managed to quit for 6 months or so, then one day passing a newsagent .....

Sadly that was about 2 years ago now, I really should quit again.

Hmmm the 6 month thing seems to get a lot of quitters. My mate and also my mates wife both quit without any help and quite easily but both have started again after 6 months.

I would be chuffed with 6 months off them tbh.

I've also managed to quit for a few months, didn't last though. I've gone from being a fitness junkie (when I was in school I was in literally every sports team there was) to one of the most unfit 24 year olds I know. One of the worse things in life I regret doing, I just can't quit them. I do try, but the problem is, I am usually around smokers and the temptation gets the better of me.

*Gives Paul McKenna a call* :p

Thats the thing Trem, quitting is for life not 6 months. My mother got cancer a few years back which he fortunately come through.

She was told to stop smoking which she did for 4 years or so but now she has started again. I have told her I think she is pathetic.

How you can give something up because you know its gonna kill you and then start up again is beyond me.

Absolutely Calaen.

That says it all see. Like most smokers, trem, you cant really visualise a day when you never smoke again. I know, I was the same. But you have to. You absolutely have to.
I knew I was finished when recently I had a toke on a err, ciggerette, someone had at work, and it was DISGUSTING :) I actually coughed and choked! It wasnt nice in anyway, and the thought of doing that to yourself all the time, when I stopped to consider it, is stupid to the point of imbicility :D

From my experience, you can only ever actually give up when you want to, if you don't actually want to it will be nigh on impossible. Although it's not that difficult if you can get your head round it.

so it might be like this:

9am - mood: depressed

Just woke up, went for my first cigarette only to discover that i dont have any, fuck im dying for one already.

10am - mood: angsty

finally got out of bed, strange figure in the mirror who looks like someone from one of tim burtons freaky puppet movies, he keeps looking at me.

10:15 - mood: itchy

i've started rolling paper and lighting it to inhale something, the flames keep setting fire to my eyebrows :( the guy in the mirror is still looking at me

10:45 - mood: burnt

The scary guy in the mirror doesnt have any eyebrows any more, i think hes taunting me! ive went through the house 5 times trying to find one cigarette, just one please.. im dying here

11:00 - mood: exhausted

I thought i lost the guy in the mirror, but he was at the top of the stairs taunting me! I found a box of cigarettes!!! but I was screamed at while lighting one by her, still cant figure out why it had a string and a bit of plastic on it. tasted funny as well.
