He may have deserved it, but it doesn't alter the fact that Zidane shouldn't have done it. Personal honour is all well and good, but he had a duty to his teammates as well.

Hope that FIFA look into it and take the Italian bastard to task.

But on the other side it was his last game and he had nothing to lose(apart from the world cup), but we all know what those moments are like, we instantly lose our temper thinking we have nothing to lose then regret it afterwards.

If he had said something about my ill mum I would of done the same then stamped on his head afterwards, it would of been like the UFC.

Not much then :). By doing what he did Materazzi got the last laugh. In a playing career as long as Zidane's, I'm amazed he's not heard worse, especially when he played in Italy, one of the most racist countries in Western Europe. Anyway, if he'd thought it through for ten seconds I'm sure he could have figured a way to do a Roy Keane and break the fucker's leg in the last ten minutes. Just not very bright no matter how you look at it.

aye but thinking about snapping someone then doing it is worse than reacting immediately to a racist/griefing jibe. I am sorry for Zidane, and no-one can know if France would have won even if he had stayed on the pitch. So better to lay the cock down and get on with your life :)

Never said doing a Keano was the better moral choice, but what's the phrase? "Revenge is a dish best served cold". And sure, we'll never know, but he was their best penalty taker and they only lost by one goal, and Domenech probably wouldn't have subbed Henry if France still had 11 men on the field...

I've got a tiny bit of sympathy for Zidane, the red mist can get the better of anyone, but overall...:twak:

Apparently it's been denied that he said the terrorist thing and a lip reader on BBC news said it was the ugly death thing.

Either way - pretty nasty stuff.

I can't help but feel (a little bit on this thread, but more in the press) that Zidane is subtly being moulded into the good guy?

Perhaps, I certainly don't think he's "the bad guy" of the two. He's at least on an even peg with materazzi (assuming he said either of the possible suggestions posted here). It was still the wrong thing to do and everyone knows this but I think it's understandable.

not seen much of what's in the press, other than on the beeb website and sky sports news, but i'd say that zidane's not being so harshly treated is because he's been such a fantastic footballer and he's generally seen as a shy and retiring man off the pitch.

on the other hand, materazzi is viewed as a mentalist nutter :)

All this talk about what Meterazzi said is immaterial imo - this isn't the first time Zidane has gone postal on an opponent - Zidane should have been experienced enough to rise above it and let his football do the talking, even if Materzzi did make a bad momma joke. If the matrix did call Zidane a terrorist or an offspring of a terrorist, all ZZ has done is prove him right.

The other thing is, if it had been a proper fight Materazzi would have kicked Zidan'e ass.

You don't even have to headbutt someone to be labeled a terrorist these days :(

Im surprised that twat aint headbutted more. That clip on youtube make me sick....he aims to injure people, should NOT be in a national team at all.

"look mum I get to do karate on kneecaps if I play footie without getting sent off" Wonder how next generation of Italians will play.,...:puke:

Zizou tried to coerce the Italian government into adopting French as the national language! zomg!

Its not about that though mate, at the end of the day there is running your mouth off at someone, then there is really trying to get someone to react by mentioning, (Mother, Wife, Sister) in a negative manner.

Matterazi got a reaction but fair play to Zidane for doing something he did not expect. At the end of the day if some cock is gonna insult your family they better get used to the reaction. The reaction of the Italians saying the french team is full of muslims and foreigners is just typical. Will be nice to see the scum bags playing in the Premier league next season and finding out how rough football is played over here.

Is that the reaction of the italian team though, or just what you read in the papers?

Zidane did wrong, end of, it was an over the top reaction and very violent. Abuse isn't exactly something that was invented just for that game of football.

I'm all the way with Ch3ts here. I like Zidane and I love the french but seriously, you have to wonder what he was thinking. A world cup final for goodness sake.

I have had some pretty fucking nasty things said to me in the past and haven't headbutted anyone since school. I know it's not the same but at the end of the day "stick and stones...."

If someone said to me "I hope your mother dies a painful death from cancer" while she was actually dying of cancer I wouldn't blink before dishing out a little pain. Not while half the globe had their eyes on me though.

Then that's just me and I don't have as many loose screws.

I'd just like to add that I don't have any sort of moral high ground thing going on here. I don't think any less of Zindane and still regard him as one of the best this generation has ever seen. I just think he's a bit of a loon module.

With so many conflicting suggestions as to what was said I decided to comission my own lip reader, and it appears that what Materazzi actually said was: C*** the F*** off and die of A***, which pretty much absolves Zidane of any wrong doing.
