Aside from the small issue of headbutting another player in the chest.

I want to know what was said to him tbh.

So he headbutts a player in the chest, in the world cup final (his last), when his team really need him the most and then they go on to lose when he could potentially have been a penalty taker?

I'd certainly say so.

far from it.

i love zidane. i'm gutted that he's ended his career in this way and i'm sure he's gutted as well. it's not in his nature to do something like that, so materazzi - who is a seriously dirty player - must have said something beyond the realm of friendly banter to push him over the edge like that.

can't condone or excuse an act which was despicable and disgraceful but you can't judge a fantastic player who has been a brilliant sportsman throughout his career on one single act.

ah well, his retirement is a loss to football. undoubtedly the best player in my lifetime.

p.s. cracking headbutt though

That's the shame of it, that he'll be remembered for this incident. He doesn't deserve it, we all know he's an absolute legend ... but it doesn't change the very last thing he did in his very last world cup. Shame.

Wonder what the papers will say.

although he is undoubtedly a talented player, wasnt he also sent off in a previous tournament for stamping on an opponent?

Exactly - so it must have been something pretty attrocious that Materazzi said.

Still, mank's right. Top notch wallop. Bosh.

If you look closely just after the headbutt it looks like hes considering stamping on the guy but he thinks better of it (in hindsight he should have as he was already going off ;P ).

Words are so easy, cheap and meaningless; particularly from a greasy Italian.

I thought Zidane was above all that.

It looked like Zidane wasnt amused by the Italian holding him a bit earlier - Zidane said something to Matz (looked like something unpleasant) Matz then looked placatingly as he said something back and moved off like he wanted to defuse it - Zid then decides hes going to have a go at Matz and runs after him to headbutt.

Perhaps Zidane just misheard or mis-interpreted - Matz didnt look like he was trying to provoke zid at the time.

he got sent off in the '98 world cup against saudi arabia, the player he stamped on racially abused him apparently. i wouldn't be surprised if the incident tonight was because of comments of a similar nature.

the way it looked to me is that materazzi made a comment to zizou as they were both walking away from the italian penalty area, both laughed and then materazzi said something else and zidane snapped.

He knew what he'd done straight away, and he knew he was going off; did you notice how all the time while they were waiting for the ref's decision he was messing around with his Captain's armband like he knew he'd have to remove it? I can't for the life of me think what someone would say to make someone of his experience do that in his final game, a World Cup Final? It boggles the mind.

It's a damn shame because I thought France were the more deserving team on the night (although Italy were probably more deserving over the whole Tournament). Taking Henry off when you knew penalties were coming and you'd already lost Zidane seemed pretty odd as well.

It's not like his temper has come out of nowhere. He is a violent player underneath all the calm and flair. Probably where he gets his drive from, but anyway, disgrace to bow out like that.

Sky sports wehre showing a previous headbutt he did while playing for Juve, sure there are more incidents from his career that we haven't seen.

Anyway Cantona was better (and better at kung fu).

That headbutt looks like it comes from a person that has done that type of thing before.

There is no excuse for that sort of behaviour...

It is a disgrace.

And all this throwing themselves on the ground in agony is a disgrace as well. More should be done to stop this behaviour. Football is being ruined by all this.

It's quite sad really, Zidane was about to take Platini's mantle as the greatest ever French player, one moment of madness and I can't see that happening any more. In fact I've read this morning he still won the Golden Ball, but considering Ronaldo had his young player's title stripped because of his diving antics, surely Zidane should have his title stripped as well? OK Diving is wrong, but headbutting someone in the WC Final? Madness.

Great win for Italy tho, can't believe they've finally won something on a penalty shoot-out. Mind I'm sure they can't either....Materazzi was an absolute legend yesterday, to come back from giving away a shaky penalty and nearly scoring an og to thump home a header, get Zidane sent off then coolly slot home a penalty was class. Bet a fair few Everton fans didn't see that one coming.

Personally I'll reserve judgment till he puts across his part of the story, for all we know the italian may have said something very offensive. Anyway he's a great player and he'll be remember more for his whole career.

Aada, you've got me mixed up with someone who gives a fuck.

I don't care what the papers say, I was hoping to spark up a discussion but yet again you bring your trolling remarks to the floor, it only concretes the fact you're quite stupid.

So apparently Materazzi wished an ugly death on Zidanes family - Zidanes mother had recently turned ill too.

Still not a smart thing to do, but I understand it a lot more now.
