Of course it can, what else should a christian base his beliefs on? I'm not saying it's easy (hence why I'm reluctant to interpret Bible fragments), but it is possible.

It's the same reason why so many different Christian denominations exist - each preaching different/opposing things.

Sure, you can base your beliefs on it, but someone can come along and base exactly the opposite beliefs using the same book.

They can, but not all Bible interpretations are equally good. Anyone can read something completely different in a poem, but that doesn't mean all interpretations are right. Well, one could argue they are, but if the goal is to figure out the intent of the writer (which I believe is an important goal of Bible study), they aren't.
