I'd suggest Call of Duty - World at war.
I know what you're thinking "A world war game? Seriously?"
But the mini game nazi zombie survival is, by far, the best zombie mode i've played, not to mention that it captures the essence of a zombie threat VERY well.
If you don't want to spoil the surprise, skip the info below(it's basically what's in the mode, nothing much to spoil
But in case you're over-sensitive about it.);
I've not played left 4 dead, but if it's even close to this, i think i have to succumb and get it asap.
We started a co-op splatter action at 9'ish, went to bed at 2:15am, never even trying to real game
With just trying that one mode, with only one level open(more zombie fun opens with playing the game etc), i'm already giving this game 4.5/5 and knowing COD, it's not going to suck otherwise either.

Short put; You're in a house, house has boarded windows/entries, zombies bash in and try to eat you. Shoot zombies/fix boards, get points. Limited bullets, can buy more guns from "not so realistic gun spots". Guns cost points naturally.
You can also open new parts of the house while the rounds go further(with ze points), which means new guns, but also means new entry ways for zombies.
It's quite hectic to try and survive, board up places, keep your ammo in check and especially NOT to run out of ammo/need to reload at a critical point.
The game luckily warns you before you're running out of ammo, so you can have reload tactics. It does have the usual auto-reload etc.
All the usual guns, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, flamethrower, grenades etc for COD are present.
Funniest thing is the "random gun box" which throws anything from molotov cocktails to big ass machine guns at you.
Best part is that it's ofcourse, co-op possible and then the fun begins. If your buddy gets knocked out, you need to fight the over-running horde of zombies and get to revive your friend, whom has a pistol at this point(old school COD).
Video of the mode, explains it a lot better i guess
