The following is a Security Bulletin from the Microsoft Product Security Notification Service.

On Thursday 18 October 2001, Microsoft issued Security Bulletin
MS01-052, discussing a security vulnerability affecting Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 terminal servers. Shortly after the patch was released, we received reports of problems with the patch from customers through Product Support Services. We immediately removed both the Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 versions while we investigated the issue further. Because the patches were only available for a few hours, only a small number of customers had downloaded them.

We have determined that the Windows 2000 patch contains an error which could lead to instability on systems on which it has been installed. Teams are working around the clock to rebuild that patch. As soon as a new patch is available, a revised bulletin will be posted and announced.

Given the fact that every piece of software you install under Windows 2000 and below has the potential to replace system DLLs, without your knowledge or consent, with proprietary versions - it's a wonder anything works at all half the time.

Give the company their due, writing patches for programs that consist of hundreds of thousands of lines of code isn't easy. And I'll hazard a guess that the vast majority of us use Windows. You can only bite the hand that feeds so much before it becomes tiresome.

Not true. Win2000 uses 'Fusion' technology to keep dll files separate and 'fool' the application into thinking it has installed a particular version file in the system32 folder, whereas it's kept elsewhere out of harms way. When the app calls its dll, Windows quietly redirects it to its own copy. In a nutshell. XP has an improved version.

I was under the impression that Windows XP used "Fusion" technology, and Windows 2000 didn't (but has DLL protection - in so much as if you delete one, it replaces it automatically)

granted its a difficult task to do, but this is microsoft we're talking about. Its not like they don't have the time, money and resources to do this kind of stuff. The fact is that they're gonna have to test this stuff now anyway, so what I think Someguy is trying to say is that why not wait and test it out in the first place instead having to recall it and test it anyway.

I hate DLLs

I keep getting hassled to write 'common components' (buzzword) so when I decide a dll (not com) I wrote could be used by another app I just try to bung the latest version in their working directory. Then some interfering tit notices that that dll has been released (another version) before for a different app and that therefore it should have been made a common component. I get reported to strategy and vision preople and asked to make it a common component, somehow. The new app needs a newer version so if I released the newer version for all apps in some central place they would have to retest any older apps.

Common components saves coding the same thing again and again is the mantra. No it doesn't, there's only one lot of source code for the dll. It just multiplies the testing.

Anyway, now I just rename the dlls to something dumb every time.

Madness.
