Hi chipper

Vista isn't particularly CPU intensive, but it does make use of more RAM. You need 2GB minimum and ideally 4GB to really have a smooth experience (if you opt for 4GB, you're better off getting the 64-bit version of Vista or XP as it can make better use of all the memory).

As for what's right for you, that's really your choice. Vista is a more modern and secure OS and comes bundled with many useful applications and new features. That said, it is more resource intensive, which can mean performance in games is slightly reduced.

In comparison, XP is older, but it performs better because it is less resource intensive. You can often find third-party applications for XP that mimic Vista's new features.

In terms of price, XP is obviously cheaper, but it depends which version of Vista you want (Home Premium is a sensible choice for most people).

Since your new PC will be relatively high spec, I'd go for Vista Home Premium and enjoy the benefits it offers. However, if performance and stability are your main concern, then XP is still a very reliable choice.

Kind regards

I'll agree with that sentiment exactly. XP may well be faster in some respects but on more modern systems the benefits from running Vista are starting to really outmode it.

However on a side note, I've heard lots of reports about unexpected levels of further performance boosting from XP's very soon to arrive Service Pack 3. Saying that, I don't think it's worth buying XP at all, when you're losing out on DirectX 10 and some of the games that are vista only. You may not be too worried about those particular titles or indeed DX10 but it may get to the point where you think "Bugger, I wish I'd have DX10 to see the difference".

I can see a fair improvement in Assassins Creed from DX9 to 10.

If you dont have to buy xp, install that. If its a new purchase then well, vista makes a bit of sense.

Also depends on what peripherals you may have lieing around - all the basics like gcard, soundcard, mobo drivers (in new system) will have vista drivers, however - other stuff like fancy joypad, joysticks, steering wheels, keyboards, mice etc etc could well not yet have vista support - same goes for any old bits of treasured software you may have - could well not install or work under vista. Just a heads up really - you'll probably be ok, but its worth considering.

If you're buying a legit copy then just go for Vista. Support from MS for Vista should last a lot longer than XP.

Just make sure everything you're planning to run on it is supported under Vista.
