Hi,

im gonna be buying my missus a new mp3 player, ive got a budget of £70-80 is there any recommendations for a decent one?

And also, if im buying a blu-ray player for my dad is it worth just getting a standalone or going the full whack and getting a ps3 instead?

thanks :)

PS3 is generally rated as the best non-dedicated blu-ray player, so if you can afford it I'd suggest going with that.

When it comes to MP3 players, I quite like my iPhone and have never had any issues with it. Most of my mates have some variant of an iPod (unless they use there mobile). The shuffle 4gb is £60 direct from Apple so I'm sure you can do better price wise.

The blu-ray player issue I would say depends on how technical your father is and also what use he would get out of the PS3's other functions. If he won't use any other functions and also is not very technical then a dedicated blu-ray player would be best. Otherwise the PS3 does offer good value for money if you use all it's functions.

ty for the heads up on the mp3 soze, deffo looking into that.

My dad is very technical minded (computer engineer) although im pretty confident he wont really play many (if any) games on a ps3.

ty for the help so far though.

He might well like the idea of being able to stream media through the PS3 from a pc though, no?

Yeah it is a very good media centre, it also gives excellent DVD playback and upscaling, along with very good CD playback (and SACD). The firmware updates mean it stays current with BD standards, something that not all cheaper players offer.

My only 2p devil's advocate opinion on the PS3 being used as a blu-ray player is that if the ability to decode Dolby True HD is important to you (your AV receiver might not support it, or have HDMI inputs) then forget the PS3 and look at a player the does support True HD decoding and outputs multi channel analogue out. An example might be:

SONY BDPS550 BLU-RAY/DVD PLAYER (MULTI-REGION FOR DVD) - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/4578 for details

Did SACD ever really take off?
