Finally anounced its still butt ugly and dose not have the HD-DVD built in. US Price $479.99.

I can't wait to see the UK price. Lets hope for the Sony Bashers it is the £255 exchange

I would have considered one if the HD DVD was built it.

Ms give the customer the option, not ramming it up your arse with no choice at all like Sony.

That is the difference, i and many others don't want a HD DVD/Blu ray player yet because i don't fancy rebuilding my entire dvd collection.

Butt ugly? oh dear some PS3 fanboi is not happy because he knows what his PS3 looks like :(

And they would still be giving you the choice if they had the elite premium and core see thats 3 choices. I would have though the Elite would have been the best of the best not the one that needs the least add ons of the 3.

I dont plan on buying all my DVDs again that did not stop me buying Bond on Blu Ray though :)

I am a Sony Fan but i think the PS3 is ugly too but its more bareable than the 360 with the hard disk still hanging off the side my dis like for the look of the machine has nothing to do with who made it.

I'll probably get one, hopefully it will have the cooler processor, so it's a lot quieter than current xbricks, at UK launch.

I love the smell of irnoy in the morning. Smells like.......victory.

So for a similar price to PS3 M$ are giving you less. Something else that makes PS3 look like a bargain imo.

There isn't one yet so don't come here about the PS3 being a bargin, people snap bargins up like no tomorrow and the PS3 certainly isn't being snapped up.

You haven't even got a PS3 yet because you can't afford it! A bargin you say?

Some of us are grown-ups and have more important bills to pay than £425 for a games console, as uber as it may be. I couldn't even afford a PS2 at the moment - chronic debt will do that to you. It's still a bargain whichever way you look at it. A Vauxhall Monaro is a bargain at £35k I can't afford one of them either. However if I sell a few more phones over the next couple of months there should be a PS3 sitting in front of my TV and if I get half the use out of it I've had out my PS2, it'll be bargain of the century.

Now hush lamer.

Yet another mistake from one of the next gen console companies imo.

They should have put the HD-DVD in the Elite too, brought it out a week before or on the same day as the PS3 came out in PAL territories and they would have hurt Sony quite nicely.

Instead they still refuse to put the HD-DVD in it (Why?! it's Elite! There is already a premium..).

It's like a Premium 2.0, a little bit better than the Premium but not really worthy of being called Elite.

To be honest, it makes the PS3 look better value, and that's a really bad thing for MS :)

they did the right thing. The price would have gone up if they included HD-DVD, and that's not their strategy. People would whine because of the price then.

it has better video chip for scaling to 1080p res. ok so most if not all games are made with 720p and 1080p benefits hd dvd more they should have included a hdvd drive inside it would cost ms more but making profit from the console is not their strategy as they are already making a loss on each 360 sold.

still wonder how much ms are gonna charge for 120gb hdd for premium and core owners

Yaka: According the most recent Major Nelson podcast the HD will be priced at $179 — e.g. the 20GB is $100 as that's the price different between Core and Premium, so the $179 is the difference between Core and Elite. Yes. Quite.

It won't launch in the EU until the summer though; which seeing as we don't have XBL Marketplace yet isn't a hugely big deal.

heh at that price we would be better off opening the 20gb hdds we get with premiums and use the proggy released a while back that lets you stick a larger hdd in. think at the time they said all it needed was ms enabling the use of larger drives in a futhure dashboard upgrade

Why does everyone say that to excuse Microsoft's huge mishap here.

There is a very cheap version and a not so cheap version already. Why on earth do they need a slightly more expensive version to add to those two?

This model could have stuck it to Sony very nicely, but they fucked up, and as I've said since this new generation of consoles came around, all three manufacturers are fucking up, Nintendo are making the fewest mistakes, but I believe them all to be underachieving, they are capable of doing things a lot better.

There is no reason why not to put HD-DVD in the Elite model and shove it just underneath the PS3's price tag, since there is no cheap PS3 in Europe it would be even more effective to have done this.

360 Elite + HD-DVD, HDMI and 120GB HDD space, looking nice and black, released one week before the PS3 (or on the same day would have worked too). That would have been a good idea, it would have taken more sales from Sony and showed that the 360 with all the bells and whistles is still undercutting Sony's PS3.

Instead they release "Premium 2.0"...

Most of the goons looking for HD playback want it all in one box, they all look to the PS3, they wont be looking at the 360 and thinking.. "yeah, now all I have to do is buy the HD-DVD drive, but oh wait, the 360 doesn't have HDMI.." Now the Elite is out they shall say "yeah, now all I have to do is buy the HD-DVD drive, but oh wait, it's not the same colour and with the HD-DVD drive the whole setup is almost as much as that PS3 thing and the PS3 does everything out of one box"...

Yatta.

I own both a 360 and a PS3. The only difference is this:

I will not upgrade my existing 360 to a HDMI version nor would I buy a hard drive at the M$ price when I can add ANY size harddrive to the ps3 for an OEM cost.

Sony did the right thing and allowed 3rd party peripherals to be added without penalty.

The only reason I bought a 360 was Burnout, the moment that appears on the PS3 I will not bother with my 360. On the other hand, the 360 controller is the bollox. Love it. Hate the PS3 equivalent, feels like it is a paper mache version. Even if they couldnt add to the weight due to patent issues, at least they could have added a lead weight....

It's not a mistake it's about giving the customer the choice not fucking you over with you either want it with a HD-DVD player for an extra £200 or you don't buy it at all.

As said before not everyone and his dog wants a HD-DVD player just yet because there isn't enough reason to have one at this present time.

The people that buy this are mostly people that will be using the public arcade development kits and those who will be using the marketplace to download movies when that stuff comes to the UK.

Forget about the PS3 and value they don't go together.

Just come out of the dark room your in and admit your a PS3 fanboi, i'm a MS fanboi but that's because i got sick of being fucked over and having to wait an extra 3-6 months for the top PS3 games to be released in the UK.

Kingdom Hearts 2/FF/MGS series are a good example of that, i couldn't have imagined waiting for GOW 1 year after the japs got it and 3 months after the yanks had it.

Deebs I agree with you, I said in the other thread the 360's pad is excellent and I think aside from the d-pad it is the best console pad I've used in a long time, if not ever.

Aada, I already mentioned the 'choice' excuse that Xbox fans are giving and you still had to try and use it again, silly really.

Is it not choice to have a Core system, Premium system and an Elite system? Two of which with no HD-DVD built in and the Elite having HD-DVD built in.. Is that not choice? Is that not saying "you don't need HD-DVD, but if you want it all the Elite is there for you, all in one box".

That sounds like a pretty fucking good set of choices right there.

Budget system, Premium system and the Elite system with everything. That's the way it should go and I really struggle to think of why MS justified not doing that, unless they are losing faith in the HD-DVD format.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again, if I was ever a fanboy it was for Sega, since they are out of the console running I don't really have any allegiance to any manufacturer. I find my opinions (especially this round) to be rather objective, I believe all three companies cocked up numerous things and don't want any of them to be runaway 'winners' in this 'war' as I believe that would be bad for gaming as a whole.

I also said in the other thread that if I was going to buy one of the three consoles right now that it would be the 360, there are reasons for that, some of which are down to the console and others are down to my own personal hardware limitations (no HDTV) and the variety of games on offer (pretty much down to the fact it has been out a lot longer than the PS3).

The Elite is a fuck up on Microsofts part, there are no two ways about it, you can try and say it's about choice but that just makes you look stupid. "MS don't want to force HD-DVD on anyone, they give a choice, even though they already have two 'choices' available already". Not to mention the fact that the 'Elite' name is not the best choice for a console which is clearly one piece short of living up to it's 'Elite' name.

Premium Black, Premium 2.0, Premium XP, Premium Ultimate.. not great names, but far more fitting for what it is than 'Elite'.

Personally I would go with 'Limited Edition' being a key part of it's name, since it is supposed to be a Limited Edition product, that fits more in line with what it is. A special version of the 360 in Black, a few notches above the Premium version on a limited run.
