erm you may not have turned it on

when you post you can have an advanced text box which lets you have a word like toolbar at the top to edit your text

i'm assuming you mean all the bold tags etc... there not really wysiwyg, as you see tags instead of actual bold text

on another note, i have once seen a text box that actually made the text bold as you edited it... very swish

(is there a way to make this forums text boxes like that?)

What? It doesn't add tags here, it just automatically changed the font. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!

It does make it bold as you type, you're probably not using the wysiwyg editor as it's annoying. Look in the options.

please excuse my earlier ignorance

from what i can see in the source, it uses a wysiwyg class as the text field... its a bit complcated looking, but i'm sure there are tutorials out there

Maybe you missed what SheepCow said earlier, but the wysiwyg editor is part of the vBulletin forum code.

For those that aint spotted it.... go into User CP, select Edit Options, scroll down to Miscellaneous Options, and there is the Message Editor Interface section where you can choose Basic, Standard (the default) or Enhanced (wysiwyg).

vB is copyrighted, not Open Source, so no you can't. Well, no one can stop you looking, but you can't 'just use it'.

The fundamental of the WYSIWYG editor is based on a DOM property called document.designMode. From there it's up to you to play with it really.

A quick Google offers some kind of tutorial on how to do it. It looks rather out of date mind, and may be using Internet Explorer only DOM. You'd be able to implement the scripts they use with more up-to-date DOM based javascript and look prettier and behave in a more cross-platform manner.

Naturally, you'd need to provide a means to 'roll back' to a standard <textarea> and [ ] tags for users of older browsers or text-based browsers.

to be honest i only need it for a admin section of a site that will add/edit press releases.

the releases have bold text, bulletpoints etc and i wanted to make sure whoever was adding or editing a press release could do it easily without having to know basic html.
