OK so I finally got round to installing cs1.3 lastnight and thought I'd have a look at this multicast spectator thingy that they blathered about for ages....

But no mention anywhere of how to do it? Nothing in the readme, nothing on the cs webby, nothing on the BW guide.... is it some sort of secret?

Oh and while I'm at it... flipping through the BW CS guide was a pain in the arse cos BW make every link you click launch in a new sodding window... ffs... get a grip guys, it's infuriating!

If you're talking about the HLTV thing, run HLTV.exe from C:\Sierra\Half-Life (this is the default install route, for Half-Life and mods), or if you have the retail version of CS, go to C:\Sierra\Counter-Strike (once again, this is the default install route)

I have tried the multicast and it's actually very very good.

A good guide on how to run it can be found here:

CS Nation Guides

Try it. It's simple to set up.

Its pretty simple unless you are trying to set up a HLTV proxy your self.

Just go to play cs/tfc (whatever mod), select "view games", check the filters to select whcih game type to search for hltv proxies for, and do an update.

Then just double click the one you want to watch.

@jobbie:
there is a way to customize your hud, its just a bit complicated.
the hud uses sprites, located in your cstrike/sprites dir.
to view existing sprites you need the spriteviewer. this will enable you to see which sprite contains the symbols you want to change.
a quick look at 3 showed weapon symbols and numbers. there are alot of sprites, so you customize to an endless deggree.

to make new sprites you need the spritewizard which will compile BMps into sprites. you also need a tutorial which explains how HL knows which image to pull out of the sprite.
you can get the programs here(300k zip), and you'll proberbly find a tutorial lurking around some modeling/modders site.

Hang on then, and forgive my ignorance, but does the HLTV mean you can watch ANY game in progress, or does the server need to be set up for HLTV or summat?
I only ask cos Im so crap I dont get in many of our clans matches (, but can I watch????

ok, due to the the number of ignorant people who are plain stupid, i shall explain. clearly.

the HLTV works via a server system. if someone deicdes to use HLTV on a server, they first set up their HLTV server. this is what the HLTV.exe is for. it works like HLDS except it doesn't run a game. you get the HLTV to join as a client on a game server. you'll see him, because he'll be in spec and be called (cuningly) HLTV.

anyone connecting to the HLTV server spectate the match, using the advanced spectate options that HLTV allows for.

so to summarise:
  • the actual HLTV you connect to is a server
  • this HLTV server joins the desired game as a client, and sits in spec
  • people wishing to spectate join the HLV server(liek the would any other game
  • for passworded matches, the HLTV must be setup deliberately
  • its rare to find HLTV on pubs because of the bandwidth and proccessor resources that are req'd

hopefully this will open a new door of learning to those stupid people who seek guidance :D
