Right, I got a problem here.

Tonight, when i tried to connect to BW servers, instead of taking 10-20 secs to do so, it took about a minute and I had ping 400-1000 ingame. I thought: 'what the fuck?' and tried connecting to a Jolt server, but same thing happened - I end up with an enormous ping. Obviously I tried reconnecting many times(Freeserve on 56k) and internet seemed to be working fine and I even rebooted but nothing changed - still lagging.
I run WIndows XP on a very fast computer(AMD XP1700, 512RAM, GF2 etc) and I usually get pings 150-250 on BW servers every time I play(every day fs). But today _all_ the servers I tried to connect to took ages to accept me and then gave me pings higher than playable.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Done that.

I tried reconnecting several times, tried restarting PC twice and then reconnecting again, but nothing works.

Down to your ISP then, i always have the same prob sometimes, where i get good days (pings of 150 - 200 and on bad days 300 - 1000).

But its not really serious you will get this all the time on the dreaded 56k :/

Just a thought but you might have a load of utilities or programs including windows and windows media player etc that are connecting to see if there are any updates out there 4 them, a way of finding out is to block all internet traffic with a firewall then see what what is trying to get to or from ur pc when its connected to the net :/ also try shutting down any unnecessary systray programs u have running while u try to play online.

Well, I dunno really.

First, this has never happened to me before and I've been playing for ages.
Secondly, I tried downloading a 3 meg file and it was dling fine with a usual speed so somehow I doubt its ISP...

Well, when I start CS, I always close all other programs + My firewall is set up to only allow 3-4 progs to access internet(IE, HL, Generic Host and one-two more system apps but nothing like MSN or Media Player).
Any other theories? I cant understand why the fuck its happening, never ever had this before.

I had this the other week.

Sorry I don't know why either.

I use Clara, normally a rock solid ISP but the other week I was pinging 300-400 on BW with loadsa lag and nowhere else was any better.

I tried reconnecting, 'dicking around' with my modem config, CS rate settings etc but nothing helped.
I just gave up. Tried again 2 days later and everything was fine again.

God hates modemers.
