You level up by healing.
Healing people gains you the exp you would get if you were attacking them.
So in groups, it's all divided equally, provided you did some healing.
When you're solo, you can heal someone who's fighting stuff and you'll get a proportional share of the XP depending on how much you helped them.
It's odd really cos you're stealing someone's XP when they never wanted help yet, you're doing them a favour by healing them, and decreasing their "down time".
