Well, it is impressive, but considering how good the game actually is in it's own genre, it's not that surprising.

If you want something special, or really "challenging"(is any MMO?), you can go elsewhere. But when it comes to having fun and playing a MMO game, WoW is the way. None have come close really. Wide, many possible things to do, enough customization and in general, it's a good good game.

It would be interesting to see how many of these 10 mil subscribers that still subscribes after the initial month. I dont think its close to 10 mil, but undoubtly a shitloads of people.

I would think the success is mainly due to lots of advertisment, easy to start playing - the first 20 levels or so if fun and with good looking areas and funny quests. The endgame however is a totaly different game with huge amount of farming this and that... pretty much like every other highend mmo...

I checked a couple of places, and even now, many of the US servers are full, and all are atleast at medium full. This considering, it's around morning time in the US. Won't dig up the server/realm/player hold numbers, but each can hold thousands of players. So it's still a hefty amount, even with some "anomalies" in counting.

The fun parts in WoW are definetaly in the low 20, and after 40. The 20-40 is a tricky one in all MMOs, as it seems like the "work stage". But this is easily compensated with many characters(so you won't get bored) and also with the "aarcade" like battlefields. Eases up the grind a bit.

There is no game around with no grind, it's just how these things work. Heck, evne Oblivion ahs a lot of grind, and it's suberb.
