Bit funny that the methodolgy is to rank uni's according to (among other things) how many articles their students (or former students) have published in US magazines^^ Stands to reason that alot more US students would publish in US scientific magazines than foreign students, so the US uni's get a big boost from that criteria.

Misguided fools... america just can't compete with the rest of the world, it's like comparing a school for dogs with a school for humans.

Most Nobel Prize by University from 1901 - 2002

1. Harvard University (MA, USA) - 28
2. University of Cambridge (UK) - 23
3. Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Munich (Germany) - 18
4. Stanford University (CA, USA) - 17
University of London (UK) - 17
6. Mass. Institute of Techology (MA, USA) - 15
University of Chicago (IL, USA) - 15
8. Cal. Institute of Technology (CA, USA) - 14
UC Berkeley (CA, USA) - 14
10. Columbia University (NY, USA) - 12
11. Princeton University (NJ, USA) - 11

Do rather well for schools for dogs though. BTW the figures by nationality are even more heavily in favour of the US.

America does have 4/5 times as many people as the UK though :D People saying that Americans are stupid are kinda silly... in general they may not all seem that smart but alot of really clever people come from the US :S

Academic performance only counts for 10% of the ranking, the other 90% is based on nobel prizes and published articles!

The list works as a ranking for research conducted by universities, but not for the overall quality of a uni.

The "really clever people coming from america" are only really clever in comparison to the rest of their nation. In reality, they're about as clever as your average middle class Englishman.

But then at many universities research is the final goal, teaching undergraduates etc is a necessary evil for funding these activities.

US citizens won 261 Nobel Prizes in total compared to 79 from the UK (who came second)

thing is US uni's probably have more money available to them than any other uni has. It still means they are good at research, but it is also not so shocking that they have the most scientific articles and breakthroughs (and probably atleast some of those noble prizes are from foreigners that are at an US uni because they have larger funds).

Also the amount of research and the quality is done, does reflect abit on how well the education is. Allthough maybe the professor gets the credits he cant have done it without students helping him, which mostly have their knowledge from their education (at that university).

"Forgive me for my ignorance, I know you guys should be able to answer this question I've been meaning to ask for a long time: Whats the difference between being English and British? Is England a country seperate from great Britain?"

After reading this I take back what I said :p, this guy is prolly 20 smt im guessing, im 15.. I could point on a map to most of the states in the US, and adults there don't even know what England is? :p

They're ranking by articles published in Nature and Science, which are UK and USA based respectively but contributed to by researchers all over the world (the university carrying out these rankings is Chinese). It's a reasonable measure of the amount of significant research coming from a university I suppose, but only for scientific research so universities with strong research in other areas but not science presumably lose out a bit.

I think its easy to say that this survey on the top 400 uni's isnt exactly accurate. The american universities are known for there amazing sports facilities, and a couple of there universities are top in the world at certain fields, but in general the calibre of universities in the UK is second to none. The Universities in my home country of Scotland are known world wide and are some of which are the best in the world, which is amazing for a country with a population smaller then London.

Oh, and regards to the post about english and british, the U.K. is made up of 4 countries, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Uni League

Nature is a UK based magazine majority owned by McMilllan family. It has been running a very long time 1870'ish. It was where "Origin of the species" was first published. The US arm only opened in the eighties. Only know this because my wife used to work for them in London.

Universities in US get major funding from fees, a lot higher than Europe, and from Industry. MIT and Cal Tech get major funding from high technology companies to research future technologies. This has only really just started in the UK. The High Tech parks in Cambridge are a copy of what goes on in the US. The really good Uni’s in the US are probably the highest funded and get the best results in the world. The published results seem to show that.

Personally I have found UK Graduates to be generally better educated. Most Americans do have a lack of geographical knowledge when it comes to anything happening outside their respective States. You only have to visit the US and switch on the TV to find out why. They simply have too much going on inside their own State/Country to even bother much with the rest of the world.

I'd say different univerities tend to have different specialties and different aims so this is a little inacurate, though it does show whats been stated above.

My uni has an attatched science research park with quite alot of Biotechnology firms in there. seems to be growing rapidly in the UK at least.
But you can't expect us to compete with the sheer number of people researching in the US so :p

aye swords is right, if you were to rank all unis in terms of a specific dept like science of engineering then it might be a more useful list. Id rather like to know where the best uni to study Jenna Jameson is, for example.
