So. What's everyone doing for the world cup then???

We're in a major dilemma here - with all the strange match times we're wondering how we're going to watch the match whilst not getting the sack for not turning up at work. :(

I just had an idea (!!) If I could get hold of a PC with a TV in dya reckon I could digitally encode the TV signal and webcast it across the network at work??

This would have 2 great results:

1) Everyone at work (400+) could see the world cup.
2) I'd be as popular as punch! :D


How the fuck would I do it tho? :rolleyes:

And, more importantly, does anyone have a better idea?

lol, one cup about 40 years ago and u still go on about it you werent even alive mt, get something more recent to boast about. For example scots fans are well liked around the world which is something to be proud of whereas all you english hooligans are hated everywhere coz u just cause trouble. anything you can be proud of ???

(also scotland were the first tema to beat england after they won the world cup, a fact often ignored by the english media :))

Scotland aren't great no, but at least we don't kid ourselves every World Cup that we have a chance of winning it unlike out "friends" south of the border.

I'm supporting Italy for this World Cup anyway for 4 reasons.

1) Scotland aren't in it.
2) Italy are better than England
3) Italy actually stand a chance of winning it.
4) They have the nicest football top.

Streaming accross a network? You'd presumably need some sort of streaming server set up...

RealPlayer (bleugh) offers a free Streaming Server that could be set up on the work intranet.

Once it's streaming it out onto the network, those who want to watch just need to have the free version of RealPlayer (or an emulator) set up to watch.

In theory anyway.

How do I get real-time TV images into my PC, encoded and ready for transmission?!!

Our F&P manager is turning into a nice bloke, he is acquiring a 36" telly for the canteen so we can all watch the games. We already have a 21" but thats just shite innit. I work in a cable T.V franchise, so we have tellys all over, i dont think watching the match is gonna be a problem.

Tv card of some sort, or a graphics card with an appropriate input. Realtime encoding is pretty CPU intensive bu there certainly are a few software mpeg encoders that work faster than realtime, check out WinVCR or sommat. No idea as to how you'd manage to send it out over the network, however, some of the network type guys may well do.

Technically possible - but you might be pushing it with 400 people.

You'll need a 300kbps stream, to get any kinda quality out of it. 300x400 = 120,000kbps. Your'll need a gigabit ethernet connection to serve that kinda bandwidth.

I doubt any uni-processor system could push that many streams anyhow. You might need to farm them.

Sorry - my maths is shite.

Streaming that many streams at that bandwidth is achieveable over a 100mbps card - processor power will be the problem.

I doubt your'll get 100 300k streams out of a standard desktop machine

/edit I forgot - TV licence people might have something to say about this scheme :)
