Or maybe, just maybe, up until the germany game he was having a good tournament. He wont win it, but not many players have actually stood out and he deserves to be in the top 10.

Schweinsteiger will win it

He didn't have a bad tournament, would be silly of me to say otherwise. He succeeded somewhat where many other big names failed but to be fair he didn't do what Argentina needed him to. There are at least half a dozen more worthy candidates though and hopefully the panel who select will see that.

Good call on Schweinsteiger, I was mightly impressed.

and when it actually mattered, he choked.

That is the point really, forwards have to score goals to really make thier contribution count and he did not deliver in that area. Goals aren't the be all and end all of course but it would take 15 assists to really put him in contention for the award.

well, he certainly performed better than, say, rooney. the problem is though, he is supposedly the 'best player in the world' (which, pure talent-wise, it is hard to argue), but to be truly considered world class you have to perform firstly on the big stage, but secondly and more importantly - when it matters and when your team needs you. in this respect, carlos tevez is 10 times the player messi is, he consistently takes the game by the scruff of the neck and does whatever he can to turn the game his team's way.

on a lighter note:

Forlan carried the Uruguay team, and yet was not nominated. Also I personally think Alonso has done more for Spain than either Xavi or Iniesta this tournament.

iniesta has been fucking inspired, easily the best of those three. xavi, as ever, i think isn't flashy enough for the average fan and while i wouldn't disagree that alonso has been good, xavi is the cog that keeps the whole machine moving.

have to say i 100% agree on forlan, he was brilliant.

Dude, did you watch Argentina at all? For argentina he plays extremely deep. He doesnt play as a forward as such, more of a lampard type role

As Aoami said, he did everything but score and was superb in every game bar the germany game. Its just people on here cant see it because they are blinded by my messi love fest and look for every oppurtunity to put him down

Hes done more than xavi I feel but not iniesta. Vastly vastly underated is Alonso.

Marc, he got 1 assist and 0 goals. I am sorry but that ain't good enough in 5 games for the 'best player in the world'.

He dropped deep cause he got frustrated, he was not actually playing deeper in the formation.

Breaking News: Michel Platini taken to hospital in Jo'berg. Fainted, possible heart attack maybe depending on what you read. And no I haven't made this up, it's on Sky Sports News at the moment.

And also, that Raoul Moat guy is in a standoff with police, you can see that on Sky or BBC News atm.

Hope he is okay, despite the opinions of the English media, he is doing good things for football and youth development, and the protection of the lower leagues.

Platini just fainted by the way, he's been suffering from a flu, no heart problems.

Just out of curiosity then, since defenders and goalkeepers rarely score, does that mean they aren't eligible for the title?

Yeah you got out of the group stage, but 2nd after USA? 2nd!? Do I need to remind you of your group?

England
Algeria
Slovenia
Yanks

We beat USA 3-1 when we met them half a year ago! And advancing from the group only ment that you would get schooled by a much better side than you, Germany

I wouldn't say we got schooled.. They scored 2 directly on freekick and the game ended up 3-1

Germany handed you your arses

2nd after Denmark

What does that say about Portugal?

Cmon, danes got a lucky game at Lisbonne, doesn't mean they are a great team! Anyway Portugal sucked too, but i can see us EU champion in two years :)
