Just had a meeting at work to discuss whether or not we should change the shift patterns. The proposed pattern is that we do a week of 5 hour shifts followed by a week of 11 hours shifts, as opposed to the 8 hour shifts we do now. Is it me or does this sound like the stupidest idea ever concieved?
I'm contracted for 37.5 hours a week although regularly do more despite not getting paid any extra for overtime. What sort of hours do you guys work and would you prefer more or less?

5*11 + 5*5 = 80

thats 5 more than your 2*37.5 = 75

whats the reason for the fucked up hours

I'm contracted for 36h/w. I regularly work more, but I do get paid overtime and am allowd to "directly compensate" ig skive.

I've regularly considered working 3 12hr days and then enjoying a 4 day weekend.

That's exactly what some midwives do at our local hospital.
3*12hrs and most of the week off.

Boss has a habit of knee jerk reactions and thinks we can be more effeciently productive with a change of shift pattern. Personally I think it's fine the way it is and just needs a few tweaks.

I once had a job where we worked 7am to 1pm and on the alt week 1pm to <work done time>. sometimes it was 5pm, sometimes 2 in the morning, so it kindof balanced out.

I must say having the afternoon off every other week was awesome, but otherwise it really didn't affect me productivity wise at all.

I never work less than 50 hours, I often work 60, sometimes 70. On the odd occasion I have to do an 80 hour week, I did one 100 hour week last Summer.

I don't get paid overtime, however I do get paid every four weeks now, which a year ago was always a bit touch and go so I only got paid 8 paydays out of 13.

I'm running my own business, and hard work is the only way it is viable at the moment. In another 2 years or so I would hope to scale back, but if I only worked 37 hours a week, I would be bored senseless and probably looking for another job to do aswell.

Am salaried for 39 hours. Average through the year is about 55 a week. Don't get overtime or TOIL. Sometimes it means I'm earning < minimum wage in a week with the hours I put in.

Still, it can be fun. I answer to people for figures but fuck all else. It's not all bad; I get free booze.

Fucking jobs.

Pulled a 112 hour week once when the picture that is my avatar was taken. Spent most of that time running around with guns only to be "killed" on the very last night protecting a large tray of donuts.

For the last fortnight I've done about 70-90 hour weeks. This week I'll struggle to break 20. Swings and roundabouts.

I was contracted 45 hours on a 5 in 7 days contract. I actually worked between 50-65 hours with no overtime payment. I would never do this again.

Normal routine is to do 28 days of 8am - 5:30pm then have 28 days off, unfortunately travel days come out of the off time. Worst ever was 2 weeks of 14 - 16 hour days followed by a weekend off then back offshore for another 10 days, couple of days off and back in the bloody office. Not fun times :(

Most hours I've worked were in a hotel bar during my uni days and as a security guard paying off debts right out of uni.

I'd never do it again. I salute you hard working motherfuckers but I refuse to put those many hours in to something that pays the bills.

I'm contracted to work 37.5 hours a week. I usually work through lunch as I'm predominantly managerial these days, and that's about it. I rarely stay at work after 5pm although when the shit hits the fan I'm here 'til it's fixed or I'm kicked out (They lock the building up). I do tend to dial in from work alot though and check that things are working ok.

I would rather work earlier and finish earlier than stay later. I'd also rather work early in the morning and leave at 5 than work later. I'd have no issues coming in at 6am if needed to sort stuff out if it meant I wasn't working til 8pm.

I'd also do the whole 12 hour shift thing but in my line of work it would never happen. I just know I'd get an emergency on one of the two days I had off after the shifts ;)

For me, regular 70 hours a week, I think the contract is 39 hours basic and rest is calculate as overtime/TOIL etc.

Used to do 80-90 hour weeks, but that was 7 days a week of various shifts.

I work 9-5.30, 5 days a week and leave early or have long lunches far far more than I stay back late.

I used to do 10-12 hour shifts in my old job and it seemed a bit pointless. By the last few hours I was so burnt out my work was worse and there was less of it.

I'm contracted to do 37 hours a week, I'm there for about 45 but tend to have a 5 minute fag/drink break every 45 mins. So I reckon I do about 40, and no I don't get paid overtime. I do however get access to a LOT of high end kit (it's my job to spec it up for the sales people so I need some hands-on time to learn it properly. As a result of this I have discovered VMware is the greatest thing ever. Ever.) and most of the lads and lasses I work with are a laugh so the time goes pretty fast.

My working time varies through the year depending on how busy I am - sometimes I work weird hours so I can be talking to Yanks at 1am but on the plus side I work from home 2 days a week which is great :)

All you people doing more than your contracted hours without overtime are mad.
If you're paid to do 35/37.5/40 hours then you do what you're contracted to do. If your employer expects you to work longer hours then you're perfectly within your rights to ask for overtime or ask for a pro-rata increase in your salary. Working more hours than you're contracted for is a mug's game. The manager/employer is the one laughing because they're getting £x or $x extra productivity for free.

Those who say that you have to work long hours to make sure your job is secure are kidding themselves. Businesses don't give a rats ass about individual productivity and loyalty.

All the engineers in my company follow the same "work to rule" all the time. We've all had management try it on in the past and told them to stop it. Management now have to ask us if they want us to work past 6PM and it is up to us (the engineers) to decide whether to do overtime or not. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
