Wordpress new site appraisal?

I have created a new Wordpress Review site now as I am getting a bit bored. I find that I am pretty damn good at creating such sites in a very short space of time too. The site is using a 'Review' package a paid for - not essential though, a forum, contact email. I intend to purchase software as an affiliate thereby getting most of the money back and then reviewing the said software (currently reviewing a YouTube Video Downloader & Converter). Not only software but other online money making ventures are to be covered - a few are now on the site now. I am using affiliation links throughout my reviews so the site could make a few bob that way. Also these articles, if they are good enough, are to be submitted to Ezine Article Sites. My appraisal on Data Entry is under evaluation with a big 'Ezine Article Site' at this moment in fact (written a few days ago).

Seems a pity the knowledge I have gained over the years isn't being used in some way with website designing. For instance the Google Adverts only show on certain pages - the appraisal pages. This is controlled by if and else statements. The Forum is showing full width by removing the side panel and using a different div and div styling again controlled by if statements.

The links in your articles to the software in question seem a bit excessive. Why do you need to mention the name and the link eight times? IMO its sub-optimal for clickthroughs to spam it that much. Use better english, its obvious what you are talking about and you dont have to directly name it in almost every sentence.

I'm not usually a fan of wordpress to be honest (far too limited and badly used for the most part), but that isn't a bad site. The template is nice and clean and navigation seems fine.

I would however write or find a mod (I daresay there are several out there already), to clean up the home page.

Also the <h1> tags just have MKJ Reviews in them, make them dynamic to relfect the title or content of the page (same with h2), most search engines look at them these days. I would probably use one of the seo .htaccess rewrite mods to improve the urls themselves, so they contain the title of the article (i.e. you_tube_mate.html) ect.

It is a matter of personal taste really. There is nothing wrong with the home page as it is, but I personally I would use some kind of portal, which explains precisely what the site is about, what its purpose is, what kind of things you review; that kind of thing rather than default lumps of text that wordpress puts there by default. Obviously keep the list of the latest reviews ect. I daresay there are a few such portal mods around for wordpress.

A friend of mine used to run a site reviewing accessibility software and devices for people with disabilites (screen readers, accessible keyboards, that kind of thing ). He had a suggestion page where software developers could recommend their stuff for review too, but when the site became more popular he also used to email people who had software or hardware he wanted to review, and more often than not he would get a free copy of something or a free bit of hardware through the post. So that is something to bare in mind for the future.

Yeah - all very good points. I can stretch or shrink the front page posts by altering some code in the wordpress formatting file that controls amount of characters to show. I could put a box to the right maybe with a short explanation of what the site is about - like a bio box. Little picture of myself might well add to the look of the site - though my haircut is alarmingly short at the moment . When I mention stretch or shrink I am trying to keep the main part more or less the same length as the side bar. As more articles are added the amount of characters I allow will lessen.

I have been thinking about asking for software to review. Where I get my software affiliation links from there is a forum and it appears that some established sites even charge for the review. With that in mind there seems a very good chance that I can get free software from them once my site is looking a bit more presentable and has one or 2 more reviews up and running. I could do with a new graphics card so maybe I should review hardware too .

You want an honest appraisal, Download.com beat you to it (probably before you were born) and they're smart enough to know to put actual pictures in their articles rather than straight link to them so people have to click through.

Maybe if you asked for critique on sites without ads and such then it would not appear so, as it is it seems there is always something financial involved.

I have a sense of humour which seems to be sadly lacking with some of these mods. I know when I have overstepped the mark - be it with website shit or not. No need to jump from on high on me though as that isn't the way anyone would respond too nicely. All they have to do is use what little brain matter they have and handle the situation with some consideration. Why make some heavy handed idiot a mod in the first place? They are bound to upset people.

If people think that seems harsh then you need to understand that this plank has had repeated bans and reluctant re-acceptance, but it has been made perfectly clear that normal rules no longer apply in his case, and that he would not receive any warnigns in future, just the ban.
