For some reason the option to "Save As" has gone from my friend's copy of Word (Office XP), and I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

either windows profile issue or most likely delete the normal.dot template

Stark raving genius, cheers man. I forgot all about that file, deleted it for a similar problem about 3 years ago. :)
