I had to leave telewest cable for DSL for the same reason. Eeeejits strung me along for 6 months trying to fix it. In the end they owned up and said that they couldnt handle the local capacity and let me quit with no notice and gave me compensation.

Edit: and that was 18 bloody months ago, and they were supposed to be upgrading then!

It was in Bristol and it took me months to argue it with them. I basically complained on a weekly basis and got it escalated up through the ranks until a (I think it was a) customer services manager got assigned to my case. She then liased with the technicians on my case. In the end I basically got the manager to agree that they werent going to fix it in a timely manner (it had already been 6 months) and they they could release my contract and let me get DSL and I would leave them alone.

I think it helped that I work in Telecoms and could argue with them on their level and gave them reems of evidence to point to the fact that its was the upstream that was saturated which they cant do a great deal about without great expense.

Telewest did try to say to me that they dont gurantee a service capable of gaming and if you read all their blurb carefully, they dont... They just talk about being able to download files 10x fatser, which of course isnt ping dependant.
