Well ive just had a huge arguement at work over something really silly.
Before I go on you must know im a full time student who works part time in Safeway and couldnt give a shit about the job.

Ok, this girl who I am quite friends with is feeling ill. She asks me to go ask Diane ( a controller ) if she can go home. While im asking she is talking to another controller (Elizabeth)
Me : Emma's feeling sick she wants to know if she can leave.
Elizabeth : Well she was feeling fine earlier </cheeky> *shrug*
Me : well im not gonna tell her I dont believe her..

so..

I say to emma : 'im not sure they believe you cus you were fine earlier.'
Emma : I wasnt.

15mins passes

Diane lets Emma go home, but..
Emma : I dont understand why you bit jonathans head off saying you didnt believe me.

Diane phones down to Elizabeth..
Elizabeth comes up to ready for a war..

Blah blah blah 'I didnt tell you to say that'
hm yeah since when did you tell me what to say ( I didnt say that but you know its true. )
She totally goes off on one over nothing
Me : 'look, I dont wanna fall out over this'
Elizabeth 'No neither do i but.. BLAH BLAH BLAH'
Me : 'jeez I really dont care'
Elizabeth : 'well I dont care either'

*walks outside to talk to emma who is almost in tears*

Elizabeth comes out a few mins later...
See's us.
Starts another war, by this time theres customers etc watching.
Elizabeth : Who do you think you are?
Me : Im no less than you
Elizabeth : Yes but what gives you the right to be cheeky
Me : I'd say you deserved it after that.

More cheerful words are exchange Emma tries to get involved but is crying...
I feel quite silly by this time as if im only in this arguement to win points with a crying girl. However I still think she is in the wrong, I mean WTF is that to start an arguement over, drop it.

Elizabeth walks away shaking her head..

My work is such a fucking soap opera. It's probobly Emma's fault for bringing it up even after she had been let home. Such an oppertunity to be cheeky as fuck to some silly manager, though.

For starters, I wouldn't blame it on Emma; she was only sticking up for you and could, rightly, have been perplexed :)

But don't worry, you're not the only one. There's a definite trend for power to go to managers heads, particularly the older ones who have a student under their command. I'd expect it's due to an inferiority complex and they make up for it by putting you down... Still, it's a job, you need it more than they need you (least I presume so), so has to be stuck with.

Hope it gets easier :)

Heh, well its quite funny that she chose the front entrance infront of lots of customers watching to have a go. I have that as ammo if she does anything which I dont think she will.

P.S. I thought it was quite a nice story Summo :< Learning how to lay stuff like that out to make it bearable will come in time :>

That was numbingly hard to read. And I still don't know whats going on.

The only worthwhile question amongst this whole shambles affair is; Are any of these ladies spinky?

It's basically your fault to be honest. Why? Because of a simple thing called tact.

It's a well known fact that the kind of people that work in supermarkets do not give two shits about their job. You've already proven that in your opening paragraph. Working in a supermarket - as everyone knows - is a stopgap between school/College and a "real" job. Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Elizabeth, being in a managerial position, has heard all of the excuses in the book for why feckless work shy student people want to suddenly go home.

Can you blame her therefore if she is in the slightest bit skeptical about the legitimacy of Emmas illness?

To be brutally honest, if you haven't the mental capacity to realise when someone has said something to you in confidence, or when something is expressed as an opinion and/or if something is so blatently obviously going to cause offence to someone else by repeating it verbatim - then you're not likely to last very long in that job, or pretty much any job.

That's fair, I don't have to type anything now. I just have to say "I agree with Durzel" :)

Hard to read? Yes.

Spinky ladies in a supermarket? Ladies, No. Spinky ... probably not.

The point is not whether she is lieing or not.
I was getting shouted at because I told her that the "managers" doubted her.

I suppose. I've never been one for pussy footing around though. Besides, its a valuable lesson to learn...

Repeating something said to you in confidence (and probably off the cuff as a semi-serious jibe) is obviously going to generate negative feeling between the two parties concerned. At the end of the day if Elizabeth hadn't trusted "cosmos" with a modicum of common sense not to repeat things said in private she wouldn't have said "Well she was feeling fine earlier" in the first place. If anything she is likely to watch what she says to him in future just in case he repeats it verbatim to anyone else.

You don't repeat a comment like that to someone unless you are either a) consciously intending to generate bad feeling, or b) incapable of differentiating between things that are said in private (and are said in accordance with an assumed trust between the two parties) and things which are assumed to be public knowledge. I personally find it very hard to believe that someone could repeat such an obviously inflammable comment to someone else when it is clear that not only was it said in confidence, but also by telling the other person they would bring about some kind of negative reaction. It's a conscious decision, even when you think its unconscious.

The bottom line is - its generally not a good idea to get into the bad books of managerial people otherwise you just find yourself going nowhere in your job, or worse still out the door sooner than you'd like. As cosmos claims the job means little to him this is somewhat of a moot point, but its a fact nonetheless.

Sounds to me like working in a supermarket is one step off being 13, female and in the playground. My daughters continually gripe about similar scenarios after school- I assure them that things will get better when they grow up but now I'm not so sure!
Find another supermarket mate.
