Hey guys - I know at least one of you works/worked at Woolies - I'm trying to find out the state of play for stuff which has been ordered online as MrsJ ordered a nice shiny pressie for my lad's birthday and it's not arrived although we were told Friday :(

I believe they are still operating, no? Can one of you help?

Thanks

I hear Woolworths are going to solve their financial problems by charging everyone for the pic n mix they've stole over the years.

Woolworths are expected to be shutting down from Jan by the way. People are getting the same things there from supermarkets for cheaper which means they're losing buisiness.

Two/three companies are on the fold atm.. MFI (IIRC) being one of them aswell. Cya retail stores.. Also, in local news. (well, old local) they're supposedly building a THIRD (Well, 5th if you know where some are) Coffee place in Sutton and knocking down Woolworths :(

It's sad to say but with internet shopping and supermarket low prices town centres are going to be nothing but charity shops, pound shops, mobile phone shops and fast food/ coffee shops.

Why the fuck would anyone do that, the Sutton Woolies is in a perfectly good building?

Wrong choice of words on my part. They're not gonna knock it down (Couldn't, look at the offices above it) but they're going to totally refurb inside for what ever the hell is coming next.. Can't see anything other than a new clothes shop/set of shops opening up inside there really.

OD, I know the store manager of sutton. They have not closed down nor are there plans to have it sold to another retailer/ coffee shop /whatever.

As usual media speculation and hearsay rule the day. The amount of people that come in on a day to day basis and ask why we are a) working when we are not getting paid, b) why everything is not more than half price as we are closing in a day, c) open seeing as the company went out of business last week. People are sheep.

Ah, I only heard from some people who live around there, cheers for clearing that up  (I actually go in there once in a while when I'm at home, quick place to buy drinks) Hmm.. That's weird then oO *Must go investigate at which place is being changed to a coffee thingy*

See, this is why FH > local news.. Get (sometimes!) not useless information.

Woolies ran in to trouble ages ago and didn't do enough to stop this happening, of course the downturn in the economy hasn't helped but in my honest opinion they just had too many shops and generally seemed to lack focus until it was too late. I suspect someone will buy it eventually although they'll really need to do some major work to make a success of it.

Well MFI were a bunch of wankers anyway so I'm not surprised they are going under...they really deserve to imo.

Sorry to all the innocents that lose their jobs though. :(

They got in trouble when they sold all the shops to fund the buyout and signed a 25 year lease with a 2% a year increase in rent. So sales and proffits down rent up :(

I think some one like Tesco will buy then all just for the shop fronts they want or buy them all and have a tesco high street and move clothing and media ect to them goverment might not like that though.

The majority of stores were sold and leased back while the company was still part of kingfisher group. It was nothing to do with the board of the company once it seperated from Kingfisher. It was simply what retail groups did at the time to increase cashflow.

They're good for the kids toys, but i only ever go in at chrismas and birthdays, the one where i live is very tired. I was in there last weekend and when i was waiting at the till, i was looking up at the ceiling, it was leaking and there were various buckets on top of the displays catching water from pipes, as there was 2 floors above the one i was on. so it wasn't the roof leaking

It hasn't been touched, decor wise, in decades

My friend works for the distribution company that delivers for MFI, he had to lay off 70 people 2 weeks ago, drivers and warehouse staff. MFI equates to about 40% of thier business
