Important Update 09/08/01 16.00
We, the five main ex-Wireplay game server and community administration dudes - drilla, velvet, stikky, amok and babyharpseal - wish to make what we think is a very important announcement to the gaming community.

Back in June we were made redundant by Gameplay plc and have since continued to support the community unpaid. Unfortunately now we understand that Wireplay (including the forums, all the game servers, etc) is about to finally lose its connection to the Internet.

Now here's the good news. In recent weeks we have received many offers to run a similar operation elsewhere. Having seen the plans and aspirations of each of the organisations who approached us, one stood out as far and away the most advanced, forward-thinking and ambitious: Telewest's plans for their blueyonder service.

They are deadly serious about providing the ultimate gaming service and have already signed up game-networking guru Utumno (ex-Barrysworld) and web genius MrVista (ex-Wireplay). They've been busy over the last few months building an infrastructure that will support a high-performance games and community system that will be launched very soon.

All five of us have now signed on the dotted line to join them and we're very excited about working for an organisation that - right up to the top level - at last takes online gaming seriously.

We want to continue the spirit of the Wireplay community within blueyonder, where we believe we'll have the support of a company that is absolutely committed to gaming.

The community liaisons and leaders are up for working with us once the new blueyonder service is set up. And before anyone asks us - yes the new service will be open to everyone with Internet access - although blueyonder customers will get access to special features.

Anyway, we look forward to providing you gamers with a service that we've wanted to give you for years.

Signed,

drilla, velvet, stikky, amok and babyharpseal

This was announced on the WP forums, also up on Velvet's personal webbie pish.org - as WP seems to be down (already?).

Why provide ADSL when a cable modem is so much easier? (and cheaper):D

According to the site its "Broadband internet" which to me either means ADSL or cable, and im sure i read in PCZone the other day they do ADSL.

Why - ADSL has a range of about 3.5km. Cable modem will go everywhere the cable is, and offers the same bandwidth for less cost, with a lower latency.

And Dan, BY don't do ADSL - I work for them, so trust me;)

Cable is faster than ADSL, just its capped at 512k ffs.
i think they should cap to usa sites and leave it free running to uk sites, or at least have maximum possible between other users of cable. One kinda huge cable wan. Means I could setup a server and everyone on the service would have 0 pings :)

Do any of you people using NTL know of any ISP that NTL users can pay for and that won't frickin be charged for twice i.e subscription and on phone bill? I just moved house and made the mistake of signing up for NTL, and now have had to cancel my madasafish account. By the way I'm a stinkin' student with no money for a cable connection so me 56k needs a decent ISP. I used to have pings of 150 (not bad for 56k) but now they are around 200 and it's gonna cost me a bomb to play CS. :(

Use NTLWorld, which is free? Besides, NTL Cable Modems cost close to fuck all.

aye ntlworld is free. I ran a server over my cm and other 56kers (ntlworld) were getting 150 pings. This is because really they never went out to the internet only to the isp.

I swear peeps are saying that ntlworld (i guess their isp) have stopped taking apps.

Hmm, might have to go freeserve - but I've heard me ping would be shite. Can't be as bad as AOL though - I'm using the free trial from time to time and my pings goes from 200 on madasafish dial up to 550!!!

Thats cos it goes to the us and back here (i think)

Freeserve seems to be ok - better than bt 0800. Think you need a bt line though
