I'm trying to find examples of wireless music/media players that can integrate into my current network. The problem is that most require some kind of software running on an active PC to work. My music is all contained on a NAS rather than on a PC, so ideally I need something that can access the NAS directly.

The only example I've found is a Sonos Zoneplayer, but these look pricey, does anyone have experience of them or know of a cheaper product with similar specifications.

The other alternative is to build one ...

TIA

Friend of mine has one linked multiple "rooms" and can have different music playng in each of these defined rooms.

he burned all of his music to a spare HDD or 2 on his pac and linked this directly to the transmitter box.

Sorry to bump this but I have a question about the Sonos system, if anyone knows.

Looking at the technical blurb, it seems the first ZonePlayer must be connected non-wireless in order for all of the rest of the ZonePlayers to work, which sucks a bit because I only need one ZonePlayer and it will be some distance from my existing Router or the nearest Hub.

So I can either;
  • Buy a Sonus "bundle" with two ZonePlayers and have one in the PC room connected directly to the existing Router, which is a bit of a waste, as I'd play through my PC in that room.
  • Get a Sonos BridgePlayer, which is a lot cheaper, and connect this to the existing Router.
  • Get a regular Wireless Bridge and use a direct wired connection from it to the first ZonePlayer.

It does seem a bit stupid, this "first ZonePlayer must be wired", can anyone advise if it is correct ?
